Q: Can they be used in newer front loading washers? Is it better to use the seeds in a bag, or boil as others have said?

Yes, you can use in front loader. You can use in bag, people say boil because it works best in warm water, but not necessary, especially if you are using warm or hot water in wash. But cold works fine.

Q: Are these soap nuts with shells on?

They are kind of like dried cherries, the pits have been removed and it's the dried flesh. Our soap nuts did not have any shells with it. Our preffered preparation method is to get 20 halves of soap nuts and put in 5 cups of water. Bring them to a boil in pot and then cover and let simmer for 20 minutes. After the 20 minutes turn off and let them sit in the pot for an hour. Then strain the nuts out and broken particles and save your soap solution. You can boil this solution with the same nuts another time or as many times as you like to increase its strength.

Q: How many washes do two half shells last?

I never used them for washing clothes, but would use more than two half shells for a load.
