Q: do these bags have a smell to them?

Only new fabric type smell, they need to be pre washed before food use.

Q: Are these ok to use for food? Going to use for a coffee filter while backpacking.

I would recommend the natural drawstrings as the eyes are not certified food safe. The all natural cloth and drawstring bags will work.

Q: what are the dimensions of these mini bags?

The product description says, "These bags are approximately 2.74x4 inches (6.5x10cm)... There may be a variance of up to 1/8 to 1/4 inch due sizing / natural shrinkage. Please allow a little extra room for cinching and expansion." I ordered 200 for my wedding and all were about the same size. To be safe, I'd say the exterior dimensions are 2.5" x 3.5". But, with the draw string cinched, the interior size is about 2.25" x 3".
