Excellent review of the ultimate Skyhawk
The exceptionally efficient -M model Skyhawk, chosen by the US Marine Corps as a transitional close-air-support plane over the A-7E Corsair until the definitive version of the Harrier could be available, is an often overlooked aircraft in aviation literature. That said, it was an exceptionally mature aircraft, with a high equipment standard, which served reliably the Corps and its core mission until replaced by the AV-8B Harrier II. This late model did not see combat in Vietnam, and has been eclipsed in publicity by its battle-hardened predecessors, the earlier marks of the legendary Douglas jet.Steve Ginter's work in preserving the legacy of the US Navy's aircraft is well known and widely acclaimed. The book portrays all USMC squadrons and foreign operators in high quality b&w pics, and - despite being primarily a pictorial reference work - includes some interesting technical highlights and diagrams. A color section would have been most welcome, but that does not diminish this volume's value. Highly recommended.
