The Man from Washington (Volume 39) (Lucky Luke, 39)

Lucky Luke is wonderful
Lucky Luke is a "Franco-Belgian" comic book, translated from French into most other languages. A Belgian notion of the American West is sometimes off on detail, may emphasize different things than an American-written Western, but is a wonderful fresh new view. One of the funniest comic strips around. I more often read these in foreign languages as a way of language study (sometimes I get both the English and French versions of the same story, for example) but they are wonderful as stand-alone comic books. If you've never read Belgian comic books, this is a great place to start.

I liked it
This was a funny book, though I still prefer the whole Asterix series. We had some trouble viewing it on the kindle, so had to use the kindle app on the ipad.

Good post-Morris Lucky Luke story
One of the more successful post-Morris Lucky Luke stories. Achdé's art is fresh, rich and visually attractive, and Gerra is probably the best of the (post-Goscinny) authors who have taken up the job of scenario-writing for this series. Some funny moments, and a densely-plotted and interesting story that keeps you turning the pages. The formula of having Lucky Luke act as an escort to an 'outsider' (in this case a presidential candidate from Washington, the real-life Rutherford B. Hayes) through the Old West is a little stale, used many times before in this series, but still handled well. Gerra likes to make reference to real historical characters as well as current events -- the composer Scott Joplin has a role, for example, while the main villain is a caricature of George W. Bush ... Michael Jackson even makes a brief appearance. But for North American (as opposed to European) readers, there may be some unease when organizations like the NRA and the KKK show up ... harder to joke about on this side of the Atlantic, I think ... Still, this is an enjoyable addition to the 'new' Lucky Lukes.
