A must read in this rapidly advancing technological age.
I find this book a compelling read. At times a little too technical for a lay person such as me but persevere with the explanations and the book comes to life - your life. Fascinating to read and understand what can be done with your data - the data you give away for free. Data, its seemingly infinite number of uses and terms such a 'block chaining', 'Augmented Reality', 'Thingiverse' and 'Open Desk' are presented and explained. Highly recommended but not bedtime reading.

Great acuity in exploring the state of current technologies and the trajectories they may (or may not, that's the point) take us on by accident or design. Many recent books have extolled the potential for good or ill of these technologies. No other book I'm aware of has grappled so clearly and so profoundly with what they all might mean.

authoritative but a bit of a slog
Adam Greenfield has written a number of books on modern technology. This is an overview of various modern technologies that we have all heard of but would struggle to explain. Greenfield does a good job of explaining the technologies with clarity and insight. However the book is vastly longer than it needs to be, he uses each new technology as a prompt for vigorous and often pointless debate.I think that Greenfield knows his stuff, but I constantly found myself disagreeing with his judgement. For example I think that bitcoin and three d printing are going to be pretty much irrelevant in future. There are far greater and more impactful technological changes out there that really will change our lives. The book is detailed and well produced, with fascinating insight, for example each year about forty thousand fingers are either cut off or crushed in factories in the Pearl River Delta, mostly during assembly line operations. There is a great book in here, but I suspect most people will struggle to finish the book as it stands.
