This book uses a micro-analysis of language in and around Tanzanian beauty pageants to examine what happens at beauty pageants, and the ways in which contestants are evaluated, and how this sheds light on life in urban Tanzania today. By integrating linguistic and non-linguistic data the book illustrates the real-life effects of language policy and structural inequality on people's lives. Through perspectives on educational and language policy, globalization, structural inequalities, and gender relations it also demonstrates how people living on a global periphery make sense - linguistically and otherwise - of globalization in their daily lives.
