This handmade one-of-a-kind (OOAK) green, yellow & blue Brazil flag brooch - lapel pin is an upcycled piece from a 1940s J.K. Straus wood 'Flags of the United Nations' puzzle, and the wood brooch - wearable history pin is a great idea for a gift under $30! The J.K. Straus Company was founded by Joseph K. Straus in 1933 in Brooklyn, NY. The family-run company made wood jigsaw puzzles. The puzzle that this piece came from was made in the 1940s, as the company used tan boxes and added a picture of the puzzle on the box top in the 1940s. The United States flag of the 40s contained 48 stars (representing the lower 48 states). The Straus Company closed in the 1970s, when the last family member retired. The wood flag puzzle piece has been given two coats of matte acrylic sealer, and a locking pin back has been securely fastened to the back, so that this piece of history becomes wearable. The size of the brooch is 1-1/4" (3.174cm) x 1" (2.54cm). PLEASE READ: the puzzle that this piece was upcycled from was made in the 1940s, and all of the red flag colors have faded in the last 60+ years to a pink. The other colors are pretty much true to name, and the white is now a slightly off-white color. These are pieces of history, showing minor wear due to age, but all the flags are in whole shape. When you purchase this brooch - lapel pin, it will come packaged with cardstock containing a close-up picture of the JK Straus 'Flags of the United Nations' puzzle, as well as a brief history of the puzzle.
