Classic Hunter
Hunter thought this book not worth publishing and sharing, but very grateful it eventually was brought forth. Excellent, quick read.

HUNTER'S DIARY FINALLY SEES THE LIGHT OF DAY.
The previous reviewer didn't understand that "the uneven pages" (deckle edges) are actually cut that way especially when hardcover books in the past were manufactured, which is actually more expensive to manufacture. The book itself was never written for publication--only for Hunter's way of reminding himself about that era. As someone who lived through that period in Palo Alto while in college, it's a pretty cool look back as a reminder of what it was all about. Fans of the 60's S.F. era or historians should check this out.

Great customer service
This is a good book, but the customer service is even better! We had an issue and it was resolved as fast as possible. Very happy with this purchase!

For diehard Deadheads only.
I'm a big fan of everything Dead 😊. And I've read most of the well known histories and biographies of the band. So wasn't sure I needed this book but the cover was cool and it was by Hunter so I went for it. Now having read the book, I realize I should have gone with my first instinct. Hunter is a wordsmith but the book is basically a collection of random musings about hanging out at the coffee shop and bookstore where he, Garcia, and a few other friends hung out before they met any other members of what would become the Grateful Dead. There was nothing I read of insight or truly, even interest to me. I finished it but only with some effort. Prospective readers should be aware that this book is not about the Grateful Dead and provides little information or insight into Jerry Garcia either.

Historically important!!
I covet this book. It takes me back to the birth of the Hippie movement and gives me direct insight into the man who came to write music for my favorite band, The Grateful Dead. A must read!

Like opening a time capsule
The insight into the VERY early scene is fascinating, and Hunter's voice shines through his prose. It's easy to see why he always opted against publishing it, as it can be a little uneven in the telling (and Hunter admits he is the least defined character in the story). The insight into the early days spent with Jerry and others, as broke young men in Palo Alto is fascinating, however. The peek into a young Garcia's mind as he realizes he needs more than just being a duo with Hunter is where the story gets going. It's an easy read, and for a seasoned Deadhead, a must read.

Almost like being there.
For folks who know something about the scene back then and want to know more. It’s great to hear Hunter’s words. He’s such an icon and we know rather little about him or those early days. It’s such a treasure to read the roots of what became such a huge thing.
