Review: The most unusual and creative series I've ever watched - I've just finished watching series 2 of this 3 series boxed set, and I'm astonished beyond belief. It's easily the best thing I've watched for years and since I don't watch live TV I've got just about every boxed set you can think of. I bought it in February on the strength of the desertcart reviews and absolutely hated it. So I put it away it, and it's lain submerged on my bookshelf under dozens of other DVDs. Less than a week ago I felt like I should give it another chance, and since I had nothing else to watch I did give it another shot. Wow I'm so glad I did as this time it has really gripped me and I'm absolutely loving it. It's so crazy and unusual, a massive departure from the usual formulaic stuff that's out there. It's the most zany, frustrating, mind blowing drama I've seen in years. The script is so creative and original, and there's so much going on that you become completely absorbed in it. The cast is superb and there's too many good actors to mention. Another unusual thing about this compelling series is the diversity and quality of the music and the amount of it in each episode. I've discovered 3 new musical talents and after listening to their albums on YouTube I'll be buying "The Way I should" and "Lifeline" by Iris Dement. Also "Live in London" by Regina Spektor and "Metamodern Sounds in Country Music" by Sturgill Simpson. This boxed set is absolutely fabulous and with it being nearly 1,600 mins of top class drama for £17-60 it is without doubt the bargain of the year. I nearly didn't write a review at all as some of the other reviews are so good that I felt I couldn't possibly follow them, but the series is so good that I felt compelled to do so. Review: Wow, just wow! - For some reason, I must have missed out on the publicity of this superb series. I’m so glad I found it. I binged watched it and finished it late at night. I thought of it while drifting off to sleep and thought of it again when I woke up! It really has left an impact. What can I say about the acting – superb, superb, superb! Justin Theroux is incredible – I wish he has more exposure so everyone can see how talented he is. Ann Dowd’s character was amazingly annoying! Christopher Eccleston was brilliant (especially when he told the joke on the boat!) as were the other actors. The characters’ agonising pain was felt especially Carrie Coon’s character. Testimonial to such wonderfully talented actors. The storyline is strange especially season 3 however, it’s so so compelling to a point of mesmerising because of the characters. Tears streamed down my face when watching the last episode. I willed for an ending I wanted and yes, I was successful. If it’s not obvious, I loved watching The Leftovers. Highly recommended. In fact, I’m considering rewatching this.

Wow, just wow!

The single most affecting drama series I've ever watched
Where to begin... This series has constantly stuck with me; every time it pops back into my mind I relive it again. The cast are fantastic; Theroux, Coon and Ecclesston deserve special mentions but the story/theme even moreso. If you've ever experienced loss, especially painful loss, this demonstrates it so wonderfully. The palpable sense of grief might put most off but it really is ingenious television. I love the work of David Lynch but even though I don't regard this as "out there" as a lot of his work, this has entralled, appalled, and mesmerised me far more than a lot of his work, Twin Peaks included. Arguably the best TV series I've ever watched in terms of how it affected me. A special mention too, to the soundtrack - the original soundtrack is wonderful and the use of The Pixies' "Where Is My Mind?" and "Let the Mystery Be" by Iris Dement just adds to my belief that this the culmination of perfect television. It's just I don't know how to explain. Extraordinary. Give it a go.

Enjoyable if slightly crazy series.
Enjoyable if slightly crazy series. The episode on the Australian ferry being a particular exampe of this. The conclusion was a little unsatisfactory and felt like they had run out of money for a much needed fourth series to really tie everything up. The stand out actor for me was Christopher Eccleston and I am now a fan of Carrie Coon.

One of the most refreshingly original shows I've seen for a while
The Leftovers immediately reminded me of the original Twin Peaks series, with the main protagonist being the sheriff of a slightly surreal town, complete with eccentric weirdos. While the main premise of the series is trying to find out what truly happened to the world's vanished population on that fateful day, the story's focus is really all about the characters and how they deal with it. The three seasons manage to build up the complexities of the lead characters, while at the same time keeping an air of mystery throughout. The show doesn't overstretch its ideas and wisely ends while it's ahead, which is another plus. It's a perfect example of a three season set which has a clear beginning, middle and end. The final episode might leave you wishing there was more, but crucially, it wont leave you feeling disappointed or cheated and will be remembered as a classic.

And the moral is?
Season one : fine start, based a round the idea of a mini Rapture event. Season Two : It now becomes a Rapture based in a Stephen King Dome concept, but instead of a dome it`s a bridge that isolates this town. Season Three : Minimal plot; just loads of long off stares in the horizon or gazing into fraught eyes of confused actors, who must have been wondering themselves what the hell was going on. Doesn`t so much end as fizzle out. With a weak explanation that required the one actor to explain in a tortuous monologue. But leaving soo many sub plots unanswered. All in all - a bit of a waste IMO.

Total BS! Nothing anywhere with this item description does it tell you this won’t play with a US DVD player. Shame on them and shame on Amazon. I am not the first person this has happened to.
