Liam at his best
Very convincing performance by Liam Neeson and Allan Rickman, what else can I say. Of course, Julia Roberts seems to be an odd choice here.

Good Blu-Ray transfer, excellent if flawed film.
As a long-time owner of the old two sided DVD, and an admirer of the film, I was delighted to see it was to get a Blu-Ray release. And they've done a pretty good job of it - IMO anything with Chris Menges name on the cinematography deserves the best quality picture the studio can come up with. The sound is good too - I played it at some considerable volume, and there was crystal clarity in all the scenes, both of dialogue and in the more explosive moments.Revisiting this film after many years, I found my original feelings confirmed - that it's a five star film slightly marred by what I think is an over-emphasis on the Julia Roberts strand of the film. That's no particular reflection on Julia Roberts, although her accent does on occasions stray over the Atlantic, but I just felt that in a story about an important period in history, focusing on the love story introduced a element of triviality that wasn't necessary. The rest of the film is first class - I'm not expert enough on the historical detail (though it does encourage me to find out more) to comment on that aspect, but the direction, tension and acting are top notch. It's a fine film, with the reservations above.Going off topic for a moment, and back to Chris Menges, dare I hope that one day some enlightened soul will give us a Blu-Ray release of Local Hero?

Good balance of historic portrayal and cinematic effect
Have only just watched this and having done so thought it was very good and despite the slightly polished look that somehow doesn't quite reflect how things 'looked' then. Some have been critical of the Julia Roberts casting and perhaps over playing of their relationship. However this doesn't detract from the film and probably drew in a larger audience and had the beneficial effect of 'educating' a wider audience about this tragic episode in Irish history. I managed to find an old radio interview with David Putnam (Producer now living in Ireland) and Tim Coogan, a best selling author of Collins's life. Putnam had tried to get the film made while he was at Columbia but couldn't persuade the powers to be-no doubt they may have felt it required a Julia Roberts and romantic twist to sell it...either way both thought the film was very good and portrayed the various characters well-Collins and Eamon de Valera and it dealt with the demise of their relationship due to Collins seemingly selling out to the British.. Physically the actors looked the part and Collins's mix of impatience and brilliance in equal mix is captured well. There are elements that one could argue about in terms of being authentic-the accents and the final portrayal of the last scene-but those points are matters for discussion and do not detract from the film.In terms of the way its shot-its fine, without being outstanding. A fine film overall.

Use it to begin learning recent Irish history
Bought this because Alan Rickman plays a role in it. The extra material on the DVD is excellent, including actual news reels covering some of the events depicted in the film. One of them suggests that Rickman got the accent of the historical figure he is playing just right. Aside from that, the film is dramatically satisfying. For those who don't know much about Michael Collins it is a great introduction. It reveals facets of the period that many people might want to forget and it is a tribute to Ireland that the film was made. The extras on the disc are really quite important to view in order to gain perspective.

Excellent
It's a superb film. Exciting, dramatic and poignant. He was a huge loss to the fledgling Irish State. The country needed great minds like his and Arthur Griffith who died only weeks apart. Partition was not their fault, it was already a strong possibility with the Ulster volunteers setup years before the 1916 rising.

Excellent movie
What's not to like. Liam Neeson does an excellent job as usual and aside from the fact that it's a movie made for entertainment it's a pretty fair portrayal of Michael Collins.
