A good read
Judith Lennox excels at writing a good story, making her characters credible and adding a "who done it" twist to the development of the story. The story begins in India with its exotic Indian backgound and colonial lifestyle and then moves back to London and finally to Edinburgh and the glens of Scotland. The variety of backgrounds serves to emphasize the shifts in the fortunes of the main character, Bess Ravenhart. For example, brought up in a comfortable lifestyle in India , Bess finds coping with poverty in London a challenge. Her relationships with the men in her life equally undergo several changes. But behind all this is the pain for the loss of her son. As a working mother in Edinburgh with children from a second marriage, she lives through various misadventures..... but when her son returns to claim his inheritance in the glens of Scotland....well theres another twist to the story..All in all a good read!

Enjoyable Saga
This is the first Judith Lennox book I've read and planning to read more in the future.A lovely set of characters with a broad range in personalties. I love the descriptions of the settings in Scotland, but wish there was more content about Simla. I felt that although this was a well written and slick novel, it didn't get my pulse going to the point that I put all of my jobs on hold to find out what happened next.I enjoyed this book and would read this book again, but felt it lost a little bit of momentum at times.

Not as good as her others
I have read a few of Ms Lennox books and have enjoyed the others. I didn't totally dislike this book as it is really well written the same as the rest. It was just far too long for the amount of story. When the 'knock on the door' moment came that we all must know is coming, I thought the story must be reaching its climax. However, when I glanced at the bottom of my kindle I noticed that it was only about 30% done. I almost gave up at that point doubting whether I had the stamina to care about these characters. The story then seemed to jump huge gaps in time so missed out large chunks of the life of the main characters. A large extra part was then added about someone, Mourven I think the name was, who had no real relevence to the story just to make it even longer. It would have been a good read if it had been half the book and half the time frame. That said it is beautifully written and if you have a lot of time to kill you might enjoy it.

Loved this book
Loved this book, well written and kept my interest to the end. There is a good twist at the end although I had guessed what it would be before the final chapters. I could relate well to all the characters. I enjoyed the plot. It is a good satisfying read.

plodded along. Hard work
I have read quite a few of her novels but, like some other reviewers, I was disappointed with this one. Well written but I found it hard to warm to or even care about any of the characters. Most were undeveloped. The book seemed loaded down with characters and information but little dialogue. It certainly could have done with less children e.g. What was the point of Aimee? To introduce yet more characters so late in the book meant I didn't really care about either Morven or Philip. The climax was too late and then rushed. Disappointing.

Personal opinion - not her best book but very readable
Firstly let me say I'm a huge fan of Judith Lennox and always enjoy her books - however I didn't feel this rated as high as others such as Middlemere for example. This said her books are ALL good. Personal view but I really didn't bond with Bess (the main character) I found her deeply irritating and selfish and many of the other peripheral characters were fairly pointless in existence. Can't quite put my finger on it but found this book to be lacking in depth of plot and key characters weak. If this is your first Judith Lennox novel please read some of her others!

a Step in the Dark by Judith Lennox
Great novel set in India then Scotland. Family saga over 20th century. Well-written and thought through. Easy to identify yourself with feelings and actions. Hard to put down.
