A Beautifully Descriptive Read
It’s a decent read with a calm, atmospheric style that transports you right into the heart of Japan. If you enjoy books that bring a place to life through rich descriptions, this is definitely worth picking up!

A gem of a novel
I loved this book from the first page. I visited Japan for the first time earlier this year and became interested in the people and their culture. Four Seasons encapsulates the spirit of Japan and the Japanese way of life.

So-so
Pleasant enough but not a book I'd recommend to others. Rather twee and oversimplified in places with a tendency to moralize.

A taste of Japanese culture
A small insight into life in rural Japan and how this contrasts with the bigger cities. But this isn’t pushed on the reader - it’s just the background to the story of the growing relationship between a boy and his grandmother. Thoughtful and not afraid to explore the emotions attached to parenting, we never know if we’re doing the right thing!

I'm newly retired and have read dozens of books this year. This one was my absolute favorite. As others have noted, it is a book within a book, and is arranged by the seasons. The parallel stories really work well and hold the reader's interest well. I could not stop reading! Along with the clever format, the book includes Japanese poems and philosophy, highlighting the differences between the rush of modern urban society and the slower more traditional ways of rural life. The relationship between grandmother and the grandson she hardly knows changes and evolves through the seasons in a really beautiful way. I am glad I read this book via Kindle, as I could see instant translations of foreign words and phrases that were unfamiliar to me. This book was more than a good read, it's a magical journey. I wish I could read it again for the first time.

Another damaged book! I have different collections of books and keep my books in perfect condition. It's sad when it arrives damaged.
