JIM REEVES - FOUR CLASSIC ALBUMS (AVID AMSC 1294)
Jim Reeves had a rich baritone voice which he softened to broaden his appeal, and this stereo compilation presents four of his early albums. “Songs to Fill the Heart” dates from December 1958/January 1959, and features a backing choir on the final session, which includes the self-penned “Am I Losing You?” He recorded “The Intimate Jim Reeves” in March/April 1960, by which time the choir and/or strings had become a fixture. “Talking to Your Heart” from March 1961 was something of a departure, in that he recited a set of dramatic monologues to music, probably best not consumed at one sitting. By November 1961 he was back on familiar territory with “A Touch of Velvet” which contains a significant number of songs that will always be associated with him. It’s a great reissue which should appeal to his many fans.

FOUR WELCOME ALBUMS FROM GENTLEMAN JIM
Time flies and it seems like only yesterday since we learned of the untimely death in a plane crash of popular country singer, Jim Reeves (1923-1964). However, his recordings have ensured he never musically left us with a plethora of reissued albums, rare tapes, demos and other material released over the ensuing years with this Avid two-disc repackaging of four albums the latest. It must be said that three of them (SONGS TO WARM THE HEART-1958/THE INTIMATE JIM REEVES-1960/A TOUCH OF VELVET-1961) follow a similar mix of country/popular song material well suited to Jim’s sonorous and sincere vocal approach. Their total of thirty-six tracks include SCARLET RIBBONS, DARK MOON, OH HOW I MISS YOU TONIGHT, HAVE YOU EVER BEEN LONELY? JUST WALKING IN THE RAIN and DEAR HEARTS AND GENTLE PEOPLE and I am sure Jim’s many fans have always accepted this somewhat similarly wrought repertoire as suiting them and Jim down to the ground. Others may find the format slightly repetitive and unadventurous but maybe the clue is to play the albums individually rather than all at once. However, some variation does occur with TALKIN’ TO YOUR HEART (1961) which is dedicated to story songs demanding a spoken narrative with THE SHIFTING WHISPERING SANDS the best known of the material which occasionally has religious connotations. Jim’s sincere rendering makes for compulsive listening and this can be applied to all four albums in this set which have been remastered, with original album artwork, liner notes and personnel details giving the necessary final touches.
