Excellent fleshing out of the novel/ anime production.
The first graphic depiction of Tanya the Evil was intriguing. The English translation of the Japanese original production was good, and despite the cheap quality of the material used to produce both the binding and its pages, it worked. However, the latest installation of the Manga suffered greatly in terms of production quality. Much of the chapter notes are appendixed to the wrong chapter. For example, this novel is Chapters 4 through 6 of the Manga, but their glossaries (which are filled mostly with explanations of military terms for the uninitiated) are labelled 1 through 3 rather than corresponding to their respective chapters. This might not be so bad of course, as the terms in first three chapters in the first volume we usually explained is frame, but if it continues, it will seem off to have the glossaries disjointed from the chapters going forward by three. Likewise, it seems that the story has also slowed down/ been cut to arrive at its stopping point. The story remains essentially the same as that of both the light novel and anime of the same name. While the fleshing out of some of the scenes that both the novel and the manga skip over is appreciated, it is hoped that the remaining volumes so far produced and waiting translation for English speaking audiences do not suffer from these same problems in term of indexing the chapters, material used for binding, and that the illustrator/ story board return to a more linear time frame for the next entry into the story rather than jump cutting like the dreaded .5 anime episode did (Yes, it may have been a GW thing, but those in the West have no context for Japanese events/ scheduling). Overall this addition, as I mentioned does not seem as well produced as the first entry of Youjo Senki into graphic form but it shows promise and the fleshing out of the scenes that Carlo Zen left bare in original Light Novel, such as Corporal Serebryakov's first days on the Rhine front, give more weight to the story. I recommend this for fans of the light novels or the anime, but for entrants into this title/ universe for the first time, I recommend that you at least read the first Light Novel, The Saga of Tanya the Evil: Deus lo Vult first.

Tanya is a Teutonic Joan of Arc
At the end of Volume 1, we met Viktoriya "Visha" Serebreyakov. She's had a hard lot, being made a refugee as a toddler and then her magical potential got her conscripted into the officer cadet school. Still, she met a girl named Elya and they became fast friends, so it was tolerable. But the Empire is in a multi-front war that's going badly and the cadets are being called into action Not only is Visha being separated from her friend but with minimal training she's being sent to the worst hell zone out there. As Volume 2 opens, she meets her new commander, Tanya Degurechaff, the ten year old wunderkind war hero known as White Silver. Visha gets the impression that her new commander is a kind girl simply doing a grim duty but readers know that Tanya is a self-serving conniver who hopes her heroism will get her promoted to a desk job in the rear. Meanwhile, she thinks Visha "can shield me from bullets and and I don't think she could upstage me." There is vicious trench warfare and Tanya and Visha are sent on a rescue mission. It is then we see Tanya using her magical ability to its full potential and it is unnerving; she is like a Teutonic Joan of Arc, even if, unlike the Maid of Orleans, she privately cusses out God for putting her in this situation. By Volume 2's end, things look good for Tanya, but there are those in the High Command who are uneasy with her. It will be interesting to see what happens in Volume 3. The Saga of Tanya the Evil is turning out to be a series that took little time becoming a favorite.
