Really great PEAT FREE compost at a realistic price
Absolutely LOVE this compost.I really struggled to find a good quality, peat free compost for my plants at a realistic price, but struck gold when I found that Dalefoot produced exactly what I was looking for, and more. Why are gardeners still using peat based composts when we all know how critical peat bogs are to our environment and we should no longer be using peat based products? Annoyingly, it's still attractive to buy as it's cheaper than peat free alternatives. So it's up to us gardeners to make a conscious effort to change.Years ago, I was lucky enough to visit this farm in the beautiful Lake District and meet the owners who are incredibly passionate about the quality of the products they produce on site but they also follow very high animal husbandry standards for their farm animals.I saw for myself the lovely Herdwick sheep and the Dales ponies who live on the acres of beautiful farmland which is (as far as I know) completely man-made-chemical free.Using nutrient rich bracken from their farmland combined with their Herdwick wool for added water retention and a source of natural potash, results in a really lovely compost to handle. And my plants, seeds and trees LOVE it.Win win!!

Thriving plants but stained window & patio
Good: Lovely compost and plants are thrivingBad: donβt use in pots or window boxes! Any water draining is dark brown and will stain! Never seen anything like itWill confine to use in plant borders but nor for pots/boxes on patio, terrace or windows

Not for veg?
I put my tomato plants in a large pot of this and they really struggled.. It seemed just too boggy.. My cucumbers also.. They died.. but I transferred my tomatoes to a local store compost and now they are thriving.. Disappointed as these weren't cheap.. But I won't waste I, ll work the 2 bags into some spare growing ground

great but expensive
I'm a huge fan of all the Dalefoot composts. its a shame there so expensive because I'm not able to resist repeat ordering! a little goes a long way though. its possible to mix a little of each of their composts with garden soil and sand to come up with a good substrate for anything you want to grow.I usually layer the soil with a mix of soil and lakeland gold in the bottom, then wool compost and sand, then seed compost. seeds sown into this will germinate well, grow down into the potash rich wool compost, then reach the water and nutrient dense lakeland gold. thinning the lower layers with normal soils and sand doesn't hurt plant growth at all.

Good compost but needs mixing.
Very dark, heavy, compact compost. If used neat it has minimal drainage in a pot. I found it was essential to mix with grit otherwise risk of plants rotting. When mixed appropriatel it is a good compost - this may mean it is not so incredibly expensive when mixed
