The dark underbelly of You and I?
The Pierce's latest offering, You and I, is directly targeting commercial breakthrough after their near break-up around the time of 13 Tales, so it is highly produced and very romantic, with lots of ultra-lush harmonies. And nothing that might be called remotely inappropriate in the lyrics. This one's different, as is suggested by all the snake-trees in the artwork. The girls are being coy, naughty and a little dark: e.g. Boring, Sticks and Stones, Lights On, Ruin. The lovely harmonies are not abandoned, but this time we have a little edge to the material. And it certainly makes for a delightful listening experience. Very classy and delicious. You definitely need to YouTube the video for "Turn on Billie". The closer "Go to Heaven" is absolutely marvelous, and definitely takes you where it promises. Oh, and the question mark in the review title is there for a reason: I doubt that the Pierces could be truly dark if they tried... but they sure know how to flirt with darkness...

Really Good!
I'm not really too sure how to describe The Pierces music, kind of like dark-folksy. But each track is really cool, imaginative and has a lovely dark undertone. Even if they're singing a love song there's still some twist. I especially love 'Ruin' because I think we've all been there when you just don't feel like wishing good thoughts on that person! lol! Also, the lyrics are just so great and witty, you find yourself smiling along with the songs. All in all, a great album with songs that you'll find yourself humming long after the CD's stopped playing.

Got a secret - Can you keep it ?
I first encountered The Pierces as a support band for Lissie back in 2010 and they made both a visual and musical impact with their harmonies and engaging, if sometimes quirky, songs. They had just released 'You and I', probably their commercial breakthrough in the UK, and some of the more radio friendly tracks are great pop songs. '13 Tales Of Love And Revenge' is a less heavily produced album and contains its fair share of the more quirky songs. The album kicks off with the dark 'Secret' and moves on to the lyrically intriguing 'Boring' ( "Sexy boy, Girl on girl, Ménage à trois - Boring. Marijuana, Cocaine, Heroin - Boring" ). The theme of the songs continues throughout the thirteen tracks.Certainly worth a listen and a good insight to the roots of The Pierces music. Less commercial than 'You and I' and their latest release 'Creation' so be prepared for something different.

Love it!
I absolutely love this album. I was hooked on Secret after watching Pretty Little Liars but the whole album is addictive. I already had an earlier cd by the Pierces so I had high expectations- and I wasn’t disappointed!

The Smiling Knife... with a twist
I utterly LOVE this album. You will be washed by Angelic Voices with harmonies to soften your psychological shield... and as you relax, the Pierces will live up to their name - they will pierce you with bitter, dark, twisted, emotionally literate 'truth'... They will plung in the knife, smiling with every thrust, as they open up the dark psyche of what it is to be a real human. This is art - high art - delivered with perfect artistry.

As Good as "You & I"
Having found "You & I" addictive, decided to buy this and wasn't disappointed. Don't be fooled by the very girly cover, it's not as innocent as it looks - it's quirky, naughty, and dark and ironic in places, These sisters make some very interesting music unlike anybody else around at the moment - they remind me a bit of Cockney Rebel and Fox from the mid 70s.

Work in progress?
I bought this having seen the Pierces live in Glasgow. I was very impressed by the most recent CD "You and I" and decided to explore the back-catalogue. This earlier recording contains some interesting tracks. The production is less commercial but the vocals and instrumentation are fine. You can judge the progress made by the sisters in the last four years. Worth buying.

Excellent

Such a wonderful style
Heard "Secret" on some chickish CW show that was on in the background while I was studying, it was so amazing I had to write down the lyrics and look it up, finally bought it off Amazon, and I have to say I absolutely love this CD.There is a style here that is so unique I just love it. My favourites are "Secret," "Sticks and Stones," and "Kill Kill Kill." I'll be studying and suddenly realize I'm swaying with the music, or chanting out a chorus and look up at the playlist, and it will be one of these three. "Secret" is this sort of waltzy haunting tune with a delightfully macabre quality. "Sticks and Stones" has a similar haunting quality to it, it's witchy little tune, I adore the lyrics, the vocals, the bass, the bell things. And I just can't help sing along to "Kill Kill Kill" it's a poppish happy song with some dark undertones, the lyrics are sort of obsessive and desperate, it's a different take on love, it sort of flirts with insanity.Second favourites are "Boring," "Turn on Billie," "Lights on," and "Lies" These are all great songs too. "Boring" reminds me of a James Bond intro. "Turn on Billie" is a really great song, and I love it, but just not as much as the top 3, but it still gets me going.Third favourites are "The Power of," and "Go to Heaven" Go to Heaven is actually really good, but not the kind of music I get into, but still good enough that I enjoy when it comes on.Three Wishes really isn't my style of music, but the lyrics kind of sucked me in, so I like it too."Ruin" and "It Was You" don't really stand out in my mind, they're sort of "meh" not bad, but not special either. At least not to me, I wouldn't be able to pick them out of a lineup."Boy in a Rock and Roll Band" I am ambivalent about. I think I would like it more if I didn't understand the lyrics. I love the sugary style of the music, but the lyrics just irritate me.All in all I gave it 5 stars, it might deserve 4.5 instead, but the style of music is very unique and beautiful, I absolutely love this. I tried to find similar music on [...], and noone else on the playlist could compare. (One of their older albums popped up on it too, and nothing I heard on it was as good as this album). So yeah, this is worth the buy, definitely, I hope their next album is as wonderful as this one. (Are they touring? I'd love to see them live)

Sehr guter Singer/Songwriter-Pop...
