Sailor Moon SuperS: Season 4 Part 1 (Limited Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack)

People really think this is the worst season?
I grew up in the 90s and I love animation which is all I watch now, but as a boy I didn't watch Sailor Moon due to it being the "girls show", but I started watching it for the first time as of 2024. From what I have read people generally say Sailor Moon S is the best season, and Sailor Moon SuperS is the worst season... but for the life of me I do not understand that. If you are familiar with the show, you know that every season of Sailor Moon follows the same "script" for the most part where the first majority of episodes play out with a slice of life feeling first half of the episode and then a "monster of the day" battle at the end, and the last 5-6 episodes "get to the point" and lead to the climatic conclusion. Every season has a major villain who has subordinates serving them who deploy the "monster of the day", and they are out for something individuals have that will fuel the major villain. That being said SuperS is superior in every way to me and although I haven't watched Sailor Moon Stars yet, Sailor Moon S is by far my least favorite season, and SuperS has been my favorite. From the standpoint of major villain SuperS, Nehelenia, was superior to that of Pharoah 90 in S, and although I did enjoy Professor Tomoe quite alot and more than Zirconia, I really enjoyed the Dead Moon Circus compared to the Death Busters, the Amazon Trio was ok but the Amazoness Quartet I really liked much better when compared to the Death Busters equivalents. The "monsters" summoned by the Dead Moon were my favorite of any season and the ones summoned by the Death Busters were pretty lame and eaily my least favorite of any season. The episodes in general had much better slice of life feel and was actually the best season from a general viewing standpoint when you take the slice of life aspect into account and is really where Sailor Moon shines in my opinion because the fights are pretty lame if that's what you are watching for. S was absolutely terrible in the slice of life department mainly because every character's behavior was altered to accommodate for Haruka's character who played way too big a role every episode(as a matter of fact if I were to rewatch the series that is the only season I would skip through the failed attempt to find pure heart crystals and just watch the main events). S took the boy crazed antics(that has always been the norm for the 5 girls) and had every character swoon over Haruka and in every episode and it was stupid. SuperS went back to their normal character(and back to continuity) and had some very entertaining boy crazy antics(oh Mako and her devotion to a guy she dances with once). The build up in the last 5-6 episodes was probably slightly better in S than SuperS, but I enjoyed SuperS' final episodes very much and thought they were really good, so definitely not significant enough for S to make up much ground up. And the climactic finish in S was incredibly disappointing with it being a battle we don't get to even see but instead Sailor Saturn and Moon go into a little portal and we don't even see anything, so SuperS was superior in that regard as well. Now, I am not a huge fan of Chibusa, but despite her taking a key role in SuperS, I still found this season to be much better. I was also not a fan of her crush on Pegasus, but she's a little girl and Pegasus is actually a guy, so that romance was fine especially when compared to the junk in S, which honestly I feel like the reason people think S is the best is just because of how much they like that Haruka was in the spotlight with the Sailor Uranus/Neptune relationship because objectively I cannot understand why anyone says S is the best season because again it has been my least favorite(not that I didn't like it). I prefer the core Sailors more anyway and felt the outer guardians worsened the show. Mako will always be my favorite and every episode where she has a main role is one of the better episodes(although they tried to ruin her with Haruka in S which again was totally out of character). Really after Mako, I like all the others(Ami, Rei, Usagi, Minako) pretty equally with them all having things I like and don't like about them, although Minako who was my second favorite up to the start of S is now probably my least favorite(of course what sealed the deal was her fight with Mako, cause sometimes both people are in the wrong but in this case Minako deserved all the blame and Mako did nothing wrong). Minako is a little too spoiled and vain which started coming out in S, but as a whole I still like her. But considering I was considering not watching this season due to what I had heard, I can't believe people really think this is the worst season.

Case was a bit fragile
The case was a bit fragile on this set and arrived broken (discs were fine). The seller was able to promptly send me a replacement. As far as content goes, this is just as good as the other releases. The video is great, sound is great, and the translations are (from what I read) proper translations. There are 2 English subtitle tracks. One of the tracks is the word-for-word subtitles from this translation. The other set doesn't seem to match the dub. My lady tells me it is the old censored DiC translation. So, that's neat.

Viz went back to the Elite cases here. So those break.
First 2 releases nothing broken. Not Elite. Season 3 and 4 are Elite case and both are cracked. :( if Amazon wants less returns. Use something other than blu ray Elites. they were great for DVD's but don't last anything for blu ray cases.. :( I'm just a fanatic so gotta buy these too. Mainly for a backup. Quality on a 4K player is upscaled to 4K so not much difference between the two releases...

A fun, classic 90s Magical Girl anime.
It's Sailor Moon. If you like/love the series, you'll enjoy Super S a lot. Though the seriousness from S is toned down considerably here. Personally I enjoy the more silly nature of this season. Plus, it's mostly a nice contrast between the (mostly) lighter content here, and the mostly serious tones of S and the final season, Sailor Stars.Picture and sound is spot on, so you're getting the best combination for your money.

I am so glad I was wrong
I must say, after the disastrous quality that was season 3, I was afraid this season would be the same; I am so glad I was wrong! Finally it actually looks like a re master, that trumps all other American publications (I'm referring to the pioneer VHS and DVD releases, and whatever bootleg versions anyone may have come across). The images are sharp and clear, no fuzzy or blurriness like in season 3; by far the best image quality of these releases (not including the R movie). But wait, there's more! The acting in this season is phenomenal! The original cast has fallen into their roles nicely and it's a lot more natural. The new cast members have stepped up to the plate and they are not disappointing! The Amazon Trio will leave you dying from laughter with every episode, I kid you not! This used to be my least favorite season, but with these three guys, they just might change my mind.As for the bonus content, this set is really decent. Obviously there is the special, which is like three mini episodes. Then there are the usual cast interviews, which were really entertaining. There's even an interview that includes the Japanese actor for Momoru. The only disappointing thing was the "clean opening and ending;" the visual quality was poor (which is weird considering the openings looked great with every episode), and the opening they used was the one for the second half, which features the Amazon Quartette (and they don't even make an appearance in this half of the season) instead of the Trio. But that's a minor complaint that doesn't really matter.Overall, five stars! Can't wait for the second half to come out and I really can't wait until Stars is released!
