This nearly 800 pages book closely looks at 100 masterpieces, especially the chronological & social background in which they were created. Many of these artworks are well-known & some not so well-known.

Good book. Very small size. Smaller than my hand . For a book on paintings it should be bigger

The selection of art is quite arbitrary, but it's an interesting read with many details of well-known (and not so well-known) pieces of art unpacked. More of an art history book rather than criticism.

Albeit a hefty book, it's beautifully printed, informative, readable: one of the most recent artbooks I took pleasure in reading, almost not putting it down. Not that much mumbo jumbo, lucid and detailed (as its title suggests). Learned a lot from some pretty obscure (in my opinion) paintings, and of course new perspectives from the well-known. I am, however, annoyed by the numerous typographical errors - a bit distracting.
