After some personal examples and exposition, Wangerin quickly cuts to the chase in this brief and self-demonstrative discussion on the joy, craft, purpose, and obligations of writing (and reading) well. This can be read in a single sitting and is written in an easily digested, conversational style. I find myself wanting more at its end, perhaps a lesson in itself. Indeed it seems to end with Wangerin, having said what he wished, stepping quickly and quietly out of the way. Writing well, it seems, does not require the laborious reading of long or tedious works on the craft of writing- however eminent their author.The printing by The Rabbit Room Press is of high quality, with easily legible text, pleasing texture, and ample room for margin- and end-notes.

Fantastic book on writing. I found myself underlining at least a couple lines per page. So much of it felt like a good, basic starting place for writing, but I think every writer can benefit from being reminded of the core elements and be motivated to just get in the seat and write. Highly recommend.

I gobbled this book up like candy. Anytime a master of the craft is willing to pass on his or her wisdom, it's good to pay close attention. Wangerin's voice is utterly unique, and he puts it to good use here, offering a loving, encouraging and prosaic letter to those of us who have a long way to go.
