World War I

Much Needed Reference
This book certainly measured up to my expectations and more. Prior to purchase I had read and noted the reviews that were published, some critical of inaccuracies portrayed. The learned reviewers are appreciated for their contributions of their expertise, and I encourage all who consider this book to peruse their criticisms. My own reasons for this purchase rested upon the merits of the contemporary photos, which serve to fill a huge gap in historical works of this era. Granted there are other books that attempt this, but without a doubt, this book with its visual details held me spellbound. As a visual reference this is a remarkable source, bringing home the impact of the war in a whole new dimension. The large format of the book lends itself well to conveying that visual impact as well, underscored by segments of correspondences from the participants that also serve to bring the conflict down to a more personal level of understanding. A highly recommended addition to any WWI collection, or as an introductory work documenting the modern world's slip into madness.

Even as an introduction, this book hasn't dept
I read this book, here in Brazil. This book is an introduction, about World War I.In fact, after after war years, there's chapter 9.In fact, this book has nine chapters, a glossary, index and acknowledgments.Such as told by another reviewer, the style of this book is similar to a hight school's book. Many big and good photos, some maps and even posters.Because of the time, the photos are black & white, but maps and posters are colored. The main problem of this book is its lack of dept. There's dozens of example of the problem, in this book.An obvious case of this problem, is on page 184.There's dates about shiping losses, but only from january,1917 onwards. And even in this case, there's no dates, about military or merchant sip losses. On page 200, the same lack of dept happens again. In this page, there's dozens of words about Woodrow Wilson.None of these words, shows president Wilson as an eugenicist or a racist. There's a sentence about Wilson' stroke, but nothing about the fact of this stroke sent president Wilson to madness.

A fine encyclopedic book on WWI.
This is a detailed look at WWI. It explains how a number of European countries got dragged into what was at first, a local war. The Austro-Hungarian empire declared war on Serbia. Austria-Hungary and Serbia were allied with other countries in Europe. So soon France, Germany, and Russia were mobilizing for war. Since it often took several weeks for a complete mobilization of all military forces, a mobilization for war was equivalent to a declaration of war. Later other countries such as Romania would declare war. It also explains why the western front(between Germany and France) degenerated into trench warfare and the eastern front did not. The book also talks of the new weapons of warfare(like the airplane). It also goes into the different fronts of the war. Like the front in eastern Turkey.

Excellent view of WWI
Beautifully illustrated, and well written. The first chapter called "the Road to War" takes you from 1878 to 1914 and describes the tensions in Europe that led to war. The rest of the book covers 1914 through 1923. It describes the war on all fronts including what was happening in the Middle East and Russia. The photos are stunning and include pictures of a line of Mark V tanks, the evolution of the machine gun, Russian soldiers caught in barbed wire, etc. Many maps are included showing troop movements and battles. I didn't notice any of the typos mentioned by the previous reviewer. This is a great book for anyone wanting a complete overview of World War I and I highly recommend it.

World War I
This is the second copy of this book that we have purchased. My husband had a copy but gave it to a grandson who is interested in war history. He stated that he had not found many good books on World War I. He spent a lot of time reading it while he was visiting us at Christmas time and we told him to take it home with him. I then ordered a second copy for my husband who says it is an outstanding book on the subject and very comprehensive. If you only have space on your book shelf for one book on World War I, we suggest this one.

A Detailed Book on "The Great War"
This book was really detailed and contains everything you need to know about "The Great War", now known as WWI. The photos were rare and amazing and the sub-chapters in the margins were interesting. The book starts at 1870, at the causes and events leading up to the start of the War in 1914. It shows the futility of war and ends with despair because we know WWII is only 20 years away. - Nick Marengo, age 13, Pleasantville, NY

Library copies of picture books can get pretty shabby
Informative and entertaining contents, but the book was fairly beat up for "good" condition, I thought. I suppose it's hit-or-miss with used books.
