Good for flowers and birds
My only complaint is that this book concentrates on florals, birds, fish and insects. The step-by-step illustrations are excellent; however, there is absolutely nothing on landscape painting! I hope this review helps.

Materials used and specific choice of subjects.
Very useful and informative with substantial step-by-step illustrations. Suggest using this book along with ChengYan's "Traditional and contemporary Chinese Brush Painting" (review of technics), Rebecca Yue's "Chinese Animal Painting Made Easy" (selection and use of brushes) Mai-mai Sze's "The Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting" (thousand examples) and many many other books. Use of potassium aluminum sulfate - alum is essential.

User friendly!
I've checked out various of these kinds of books. I like this one, because it is thorough for the beginner: it has suggested supplies described, and detailed instructions. Compared to the other books, this one has a nice selection of subjects to paint that interest me, and as you progress, subjects become scenery.Worth looking into!

Good how to book
I am happy with this book. Most traditional painting subjects are covered and directions are clear. Will be using this with young relatives who wish to learn to paint. The book will be a great help.

Does not include gongbi style
The image on the book cover appears to be painted in gongbi (fine-line) style, and the description seems to imply that both gongbi and xieye styles are to be covered in the book.In fact the book deals only with the xieye style (freehand). For that reason alone I was very hopeful on placing the order and disappointed on receiving the book - as there are few, if any, english books available covering the gongbi style. To my eyes the book's cover image is painted on sized paper containing mica flakes. However every image within the book is painted on unsized, absorbent rice paper. I think that is quite misleading, as one will not be able to duplicate the cover image with the materials and techniques covered inside the book.
