This is a fantastic tool for my elderly grandfather
Been really happy with this - had it for 6 months or more now. It's easy to update, locks so he can't fool with it, and beeps pretty loud. It sends me text messages when dosages are overdue and when it's low. Has lots of ways it can be set up for dosing. We use it for 2 times a day, but it can be set for 3 or 4 times a day as well - maybe more, I don't remember all the options since I don't use them Anyway, it's pricy - but it does exactly what you need it to in order to make sure the elders are taking care of business!

Pays for itself in 3 months!
I purchased this for my 88 year old mother-in-law with moderate dementia 3 months ago. She is an independent resident in an assisted living complex. Lives in her own apartment and responsible for getting herself to meals and events. She takes meds 2 times per day and until recently did it with few omissions. After she had a week of missing several doses several days in a row, it was either pay a nurse $300/ month to give her the meds or purchase the MD2 PLUS. I tried calling her but that is nearly impossible to do reliably twice per day. I then tried a lesser expensive pill reminder system but found she could easily ignore it's faint little beeps that stop after 60 seconds. On the MD2 I use the melodious 2 tone alarm and it is loud enough that she can't ignore it and lasts for 90 min. Plugs in, no batteries to go dead. Receiving a text to my phone if she misses a dose keeps things in real time instead of me discovering it a few days later. Being able to log in to her account from any computer and reviewing all the data helped me to find just the right time to have her take each dose. There are a few negatives but none of these should stop anyone from purchasing the MD2 PLUS --- the tray is heavy for the frail but she managed to get used to it and puts it back properly in the base. --- gel type capsules can stick inside the chambers. --- sometimes pills can wedge into the bottom corners because of the shape, I load the larger pills first and that helps. --- you have to find a location fairly close to the phone line outlet and electrical outlet --- the instructions that came with the unit were a xerox copy made from the booklet of a slightly different model, most things were the same but not the directions when it is time to put in a new tray. Basically you open it up, place the new tray with "start" at the front, hit the " set number of doses" button, then the "-" button once to take it back to 28 doses, if you use the "+" button you have to hit until you get up to 28. Then hit the set doses again, the tray will make a revolution and it's done. If you hit any other buttons you may accidently turn off the alarm or change the dose times, so if you do check every setting before you are done. The positives are too many to list but here are a few: --- comes with an extra tray to fill ahead of time --- holds a good amount of pills and large pills like vitamins and calcium. --- the alarm is loud enough and plays long enough --- monitoring is phenomenal --- early dose feature is great for when I have to take her to an appointment before dose timeMy mother-in-law has done wonderfully with MD2 PLUS. It will save us $3600 per year in additional expense since we don't need a nurse to administer her medications. I nearly choked at the price when i was looking for a device but when I did the math I realized this is a bargain.

Save your hard earned money.
Save your hard earned money.- Extremely complicated to program and operate... I’m a software engineer so good luck.- The SMS notification feature does not connect to your home network, it uses an rj11 phone line. To anyone younger than generation-X, there used to be these hard-wired phones in people's houses. The engineers of this product think folks still have these “land lines.” You can read more about this on wikipedia, or call the engineers for their recommendation on what encyclopedia to use.- The device asks for the date. Last night we flipped off of daylight savings time, but for some reason the device didn’t change the time. For the life of me, I can’t figure out why the device would need to ask you the date other than to handle DST changes.- Just absolutely insane price for what it does.Don’t make my mistake, look somewhere else.

Phone support has also been excellent.
This product is a godsend. It's working PERFECTLY. We were having a problem with my 84 year old mother with dementia remembering to take her medication and to keep her from accidental double dosing. She's been using it for 10 days with not one dose missed. The two times she did not hear the alarm, we received a text letting us know we needed to call and remind her. It was well worth it to spend the extra money to get this monitored version. The monitoring is included for free. No monthly charges. In our particular case, I'm not sure this pill dispenser would really solve our challenge without the monitoring and the ability to view dispensing history and compliance online. Phone support has also been excellent.

It works...
This has been a reliable unit. We have two of them, one for each parent and they were able to take their pills on their own without too much "training". We have one parent that takes pills 4x per day and one unit is 6x per day so we need to refill approximately every 3-4 days. We have recently experienced an issue with one of the dispensers where the alarm will not turn off after turning the unit upside down to get the pills. Don't call the 1-800 # for help unless you want to talk about everything BUT the issue you are having. I called the non 1-800 # and was immediately able to talk to someone but they can't trouble-shoot unless you are in front of the device...which seems pretty ridiculous considering there's only so much you can do with these things...

E-pill Dispenser Reporting
My review is low because of difficulty trying to get solutions for software problems with the device’s reporting system.

Customer Support/Service No Sense of Urgency
The unit works OK with the exception that it's supposed to dispense up to 28 doses, but I can't get the unit to go beyond 23. I've called their support organization multiple times with no resolution. I've been place on indefinite hold. My call has been dropped when transferred and when promised a callback within the hour I received no call back in over three hours. There doesn't appear to be a sense of urgency in helping me resolve my issue. Very disappointing and not very customer oriented. If you don't mind customer-no-service then go ahead and buy the unit.

Kept my mother independent longer
As my mother's Alzheimers developed, the e-pill MD2 PLUS MedSmart allowed her to keep more of her independence longer by helping us manage her meds and managing her in taking them on time. The text alerts of missed dosages or machine problems was great. It's also included in the price - no monthly fees. The unit may seem a bit pricey but it was a great investment for us. Customer service was great in setting up the alerts (went to me and my wife's phone).
