My first 2 roasts were 300 g regular Uganda beans and 300 g of swp decaf Sumatra beans. I roasted outside ambient temperature 55 f. Roast profile was based on time and bean color. I tented the roaster with welding blanket due to outside temperature. Dried both roasts for 10 minutes with the Ugandan beans at 170 c on the dial and decaf at 160 c. I gradually raised the temperature on both, Uganda to 230 c and decaf to 210 c. Total roast time on Uganda was 26 minutes and decaf 24 minutes. Uganda came out a nice medium roast but the decaf was a light roast, looked medium but tough to grind. Mixed the 2 and coffee was great. On my third roast I decided to mix the Uganda and decaf Sumatra and roast them together, 150 g each. This time I decided to use infrared thermometer gun to roast by temperature. Roasted outside in 40 f with welding blankets on top and bottom of the roaster (placed roaster on cookie sheet with blanket under that). Dried the batch for 10 minutes at 170 c on the dial then set the dial to 225 c and monitored the surface temperature of the beans till they reached 415 f. Total roast time was 24 minutes, came out medium roast. Great.

Ok, so forget the attached instructions... Read the reviews for best results! I was roasting Indian monsoon Malabar, quite a moist, dense bean. I messed up the first batch, but still managed to salvage it... Just a little grassy. Here's my method, great results for the past 4 batches... Preheat on full temp! 19 mins. Throw 400gm of beans in... Any more seems to be too inconsistent and uneven. Turning down to 200c-220c Wait for drying phase... 10mins approximately... Should start browning well and first crack by 15mins... Give it another 10 mins..... I switch it off right at 2nd crack... 25-28mins total time. Cool it off right away! I'll probably reduce temp and times for different types of beans!

This is a very good quality roaster for producing excellent roasted beans the way they should turn out. Read some of the other reviews where they complained but they didn’t follow instructions. I tried doing it different ways like they said which didn’t work well but when I followed the directions exactly it worked perfectly. I only roast enough for three days at a time. One thing that is important that I had to do is the rotation arms that move around the beans, it wasn’t quite flat enough. I took the nut off and bent the arms slightly until they were perfectly flat and not scraping on the heating surface. That way no small beans can get trapped under the arms. You want the arms nice and flat because then they allow the beans to distribute evenly while roasting. This is not a high volume roaster. I only make slightly less tian 3/4 of a cup of raw beans and that gives me 1 1/3 cups of Roasted Beans when I use the organic single origin Guatemala raw beans from Equator company. Also, it is best to allow the beans to cure for two days to absorb enough CO2 and enrich the flavour. They still taste great freshly roasted but that two day time thing is good. Make sure you use up the beans within 5 days after roasting! Highly recommend this machine. Good value for the price too.
