Nicely done
A very well done treatment of the quilts done in response to the call by the nation for "covers for the soldiers" during the Civil War. I am a quilter and if constantly amazes me how quickly the women of that day were able to produce these quilts. They were definitely not produced to be Heirloom quilts, they were Utilitarian, to be used and used up, that is why there are so few left to history. My Great Grandfather served from Illinois, the last year of the War, at the age of 18, as far as I know he did not bring back a quilt, if he had one. I was very honored to have met and spoken with Don Beld when he attended our Quilt Guild and gave a talk about the quilts of the Civil War and his groups efforts to provide quilts to the families of the soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq.

What a Cover-Up!
Consider this a good reference for those interested in quilts. I found nothing worthwhile in this book but the person for whom I bought it loved it and is searching for similar titles.

Beautiful book!
I love the way this book was written. The detailed historical information and abundance of photographs are wonderful. I especially enjoyed the chapter about the quilt made in Brandon, VT. The author even provided a photo of the quilt maker's grave marker in Minnesota! The Ten Commandments poem was a great addition. The other chapters are equally interesting and have many great photographs. And the second section about reproducing antique quilts is well done, nicely photographed, and the instructions are clear. I have not made any of the quilts yet, but I am sure I will. This is a perfect addition for the library of any quilter/genealogist/Civil War historian.

I would recommend this book to any one interested in Civil War ...
I read this book from cover to cover. The historical and the construction information for these quilts is so interesting. I also appreciated the patterns and additional instructions included. I plan on making a quilt in the "potholder" style to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War. I plan to use some pattern from the book and some from other sources. I would recommend this book to any one interested in Civil War reproduction quilts.

Civil War Quilts
I just love this book, I am very much interested in the Civil War Era and this book details the war and the men and woman who served our country and the beautiful quilts made during this time. This books tells of the woman who held jobs, kept the family together while the father, husband and sons went off to war, how they made beautiful quilts to keep our soldiers warm and remind them of home, interesting to read and love the patterns of an era gone by, easy to understand. Worth the price

If you are interested in Civil War quilts or in the Civil war in general, you must have this book! It is well written and has wonderful illustrations. The section on fabric selection was helpful as well. Patterns and directions are given for reproducing all of the surviving civil war quilts, along with specific information on each of the quilts. I recommend this book highly!

Beautiful Read
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Well researched with great photography, patterns are given to replicate quilts of the era. Insight with great visuals is given to choose the proper reproduction fabrics from that period. Should you decide to make one like these "potholder" quilts, several options are given for today's quilter. Background on both those who made and those who received these quilts was fascinating.
