Very useful for nursing students
I am a nursing student and bought this book to use along with our main degree text book, Ross and Wilson's Anatomy and Physiology in Health and Illness. The Dummies book is very well organised and goes into quite a bit of detail to help me understand the basics of A&P before reading in more depth my main book. The book arrived very promptly and was well packaged.

Concise and Informative
When the book arrived, a quick scan-through suggested that it took more of a scientific approach than a highly illustrated A-Z of the Human Body that I had previously read. However, this has since proved to be beneficial as the contents, for me, were well structured in a logical order and filled in a huge amount of blanks that had been missing from my limited knowledge. Whilst some of the chapters may seem quite difficult to grasp at first and the supporting colour illustrations are rather minimal, it is very easy to complement these by accessing medical or encyclopedic websites.What I particularly learned from the book is that the human body is a complex, organic, self regulating and self-repairing machine that follows basic scientific and engineering principals. However, the machine requires to be treated with respect by the owner to help avoid long term maintenance issues. I also observed that some of the apparently difficult chapters suddenly became much easier to understand where I had a special interest due to close family members' medical conditions.In conclusion, I found Anatomy and Physiology for Dummies was both a good read and a useful source of information that would probably be of help to pre-medical students or those, like me, who just wish to know more about the ultimate science.

Great book written in a light hearted manner
Great book written in a light hearted manner. Bought this for my wife who is doing a course but pleased to say that our son is also reading it as it's helping with his science / biology study at school. Overall good information, well written in a quirky and light hearted manner.

A++++++
This book is ideal for any health and social students but also for student nurses as it provides the fundamental aspects of anatomy and physiology. This book is a must buy, it is highly informative and helpful in any health courses. There isn't a lot of images as it is more writing than images but it is still extremely helpful.

A useful reference for coaches
I purchased this as a sports coach and trainer of sports coaches to assess its suitability as a reference and to be added to a list of recommended reading for those that I train.I believe it meets that criteria and is an easy to read and affordable work for those that need to understand the workings of the human body. As other reviewers have commented, it could be even more useful with additional illustrations, particularly colour plates, but this would inevitably increase its price and thus be less attractive to trainees.

Great book for above average dummies
I bought this book because I wanted some basical medical knowledge (never taken biology classes and finding on-line courses too technical). This was just what I needed - it covers all the main areas of the human body/workings...but more importantly it's written with humour and light-heartedness. There are plenty of diagrammes to illustrate the text too. The book follows the usual easy to follow 'for dummies' style with tips, points to remember etc.I gave 4 instead of 5 stars because this is for readers not totally dummies! I consider this book to the aimed at readers with average to above average intelligence or with some basic biology knowledge. That being said, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a book that covers such a complex topic explained in plain English.Definitely my medical reference book now!

Great for beginners!!!
I purchased this book with the intention of learning some basic concepts of anatomy and physiology. I seem to have developed an interest in this subject area just on hearing other friends talk about nursing, working in hospitals etc...so I figured this was a great way to start learning, and I was right!As I read through this book (I have not completed it as of this review; only up to chapter 8), the material is presented in the simplest terms possible. Appropriate medical terminology is used when discussing certain subjects, but this book is very easy to understand. It takes more than just reading this book to comprehend what you are reading, the reader must take initiative to learn more. At times, it can be overwhelming because there are complex chemistry / microbiology parts when you get to the part about glycolosis and subjects like it, but taking your time; and re-reading over it enables you to grasp the basic concepts of the more complex parts of this book. What i found to be very helpful, is in conjunction with this book, making use of video lectures for a more interactive learning experience. I use youtube a lot, because reading this book is GREAT, but reading alone is not good enough. Doing searches on youtube for videos on things like the circulatory system, DNA and cell structures will help the reader of this book better understand what they are reading. Because not only are you reading, you can actually see how things work inside the body in terms of our anatomy and physiology.There is a channel on youtube which I found most helpful, it is called: khanacademy. There are videos on "DNA" and "Parts of a cell" that are very helpful and compliment the reading of this book nicely! It took me a while to find this youtube channel. Be very careful as any joe shmoe can put anything up on youtube. But the khanacademy is the absolute best I have found. However, always take what you find on youtube with a little caution. I have read many reviews about the khanacademy and he has even been featured on CNN, interviewed on KPBS etc...so...just something to think about as you ready this book.I return to college in a few months so I figured learning as much as I can beforehand will make my experience in school more enjoyable and make the learning progress smoothly. With the help of this book, hearing the terminology and topics in a classroom will not be as foreign to me as I have never studied this area before.Overall a GREAT book; and the ONLY thing I could say needed to be improved is, not with the written material, but I feel that an interactive DVD encyclopedia made specifically to anatomy and physiology should be included with this book. This minor detail was not enough for me to lower the rating from a Five-star to anything lower. This is truly a great book at a fair price.
