As an example, you may want to increase or decrease the size of project by 50%. By using the 1:1.5 setting you can accomplish this task, and 1:2 setting will either reduce it by 1/2 or double it. This item is for the average user, not the person wanting high accuracy like the expensive ones, we sell many of these to schools where teaching with less expensive is important. More showy than practical
I love this proportional divider, though I don't use it much for developing painting or drawing compositions. I use my longer plastic one for actual artwork. But this is beautiful, antique looking piece that looks super cool in my studio, and my guests are always drawn to it with awe. It's more of a piece of art in its own right than an artist tool. I'm glad I have it, and it would work as a small proportional divider if I didn't have a more functional plastic one.
