Case Studies on Diversity and Social Justice Education (Equity and Social Justice in Education Series)

Great book by Gorski and Pothini
Gorski and his co-authors write great books, and this one is one of my favorites! I highly recommend it for students and colleagues. While the cases are designed to bring attention to troubling issues pertaining to bias and discrimination, the book itself is actually a joy to read. As odd as it may sound, in some ways it reminded me of the old Encyclopedia Brown books; I would read a case, attempt to answer the questions, and then turn to the back of the book for the authors' points of consideration. However, the authors also provide information with regard to using the case method, and they provide really good references such as "The Art and Craft of Case Writing" by Naumes and Naumes. Frankly, I'm inspired to try my own hand at writing cases with regard to other areas of education to use with students. Additionally, I would like to see even more teaching with cases in education. This text also helped to improve my own understanding with regard to diversity and social justice issues that I had not previously considered. I would definitely recommend using this case study book with education majors as a supplemental class text, which is what I used in conjunction with "Affirming Diversity" by Nieto and Bode. Admittedly, some students may object to the price for a book that may seem "thin," but it is well worth the cost for the learning it can facilitate through group discussions and other means of instruction. As an instructor, I also came to rely on "Cultivating Social Justice Teachers" by Gorski et al., which I also recommend.

Book for SURJ teachers
This book is a great resource for educators and administrators. The topics included help inspire conversations about social justice issues such as equity, race, LGBTQ, ability, class etc. that can lead to important changes that will only improve the way faculty work with students and families. If you would like to improve the relationships between families and staff, and create a school that is inclusive and respectful, this is the book for you.

Damaged in printing process
This textbook was in mostly good condition when i got it, but one page got damaged and stuck into the binding. I'm still giving 4 stars since the pages I needed were all in good condition, and this is a book for a college course so I am happy to have received it quickly even if there was a fault in manufacturing.

An important read for those with a vested interest in public education.
Focused on relevant issues surrounding diversity and social justice in schools, these cases help facilitate discussion and provide a space to problematize issues related to this important work. I appreciate the accessibility Gorski and Pothini bring to these topics and highly recommend this book for teachers, school leaders, as well as researchers and professors of education. This is an important read for those with a vested interest in public education.

Great read for new professionals in Higher Ed
I've been in the field for 8 years, and I love these case studies. This new edition is great for mid-level professionals and new professionals alike! I enjoyed reading on new trends and sharing with co-workers to see what they would do in these situations.

Meh
Required for my class. Not a book I would keep. The book is a compilation of scenarios that have (or could have happened) in a school. Then there are reflection questions for you (the reader) to think about what the teacher did wrong and how you would handle the situation differently. Its an easy read but lacks depth.

Best read for those who profess to be “doing equity”
This text is a must read for any person engaging in equity; students, teachers and school leaders in K-12 and higher education will especially benefit, but this book seems universal to me in that the approach could and should be applied in settings outside of schools, too. Using an equity literacy framework, the book offers cases that allow the reader to critically analyze and detect inequity, consider multiple perspectives and generate action steps to become “a threat to inequity.”
