Full of heart and humor
"Emma & Co." picks up after the book "Emma and I" -- giving more information in the lives of Sheila Hocken, her husband Don and daughter Kerensa; and their dogs Bracken, Buttons, Teak, Mocha, Shadow -- and, of course, Emma. For those who haven't read "Emma and I" -- you should read that book first. Both books are quick-reads and are enjoyable and inspiring."Emma and I" tells the story of Sheila's blindness. Although Sheila makes the best of her life, the world doesn't open up to her until she gets a guide dog, the amazing Labrador Emma. I know there are such amazing dogs. They may cross your path once in a lifetime."Emma and Co" features the stories of Emma after retirement. Sheila and family consider what is best for Emma, although the media and canine societies clamor for Emma's presence at events. When Sheila feel Emma would be too stressed by travel, she take another amazing dog, Bracken, to these events in Emma's place.Bracken is discovered to be witty and a cut-up, with great acting skills; he is also empathetic and caring toward Emma. Bracken leads Emma on a leash when Emma herself gets blind in her old age. All the dogs are characters with distinct individualities. Sheila is quite balanced in her portrayal of them, however. She doesn't sentimentalize their qualities.I read this book in one morning -- at 146 pages, the writing is clear and propels you through the lives of Sheila Hocken and her extended family.
