Chandra Paperback – June 30, 2004

I read this book to my pupils and they were riveted by this gripping tale. In fact, the message is so strong that 5 copies of this book were stolen from my library by religious extremists. Some were recovered, and some, allegedly, destroyed. Being based on fact, it illustrates the danger of cultural obsessions.

This book was really good, soon has I started reading it I couldn't put it down. 11 yr. old Chandra is to marry a 16 yr. old boy through an arranged marriage. Everything is like a fairytale for Chandra, until she goes to visit her husband's family, her fairytale turns into a living nightmare! I say no more, read this book you will truly enjoy it.

I read this book a couple months ago and I really loved it. Though I read it in Dutch I think the English version is just as great, maybe ever better. It tells the story about a girl Chandra who has to marry a boy that her father chose for her. She really likes him and is very happy, but when he dies everything changes......

Bought this book as we met the author whilst she was doing her background/research while we were in Delhi in the 90's. The research was obviously very comprehensive, thankyou!

If you like reading about rural life in India this book is a must. Beautifully written!! My daughter 10 also enjoyed this book. But be warned it is very sad
