Japan Travel Map Fifth Edition (Periplus TravelMaps)

This Periplus Travel Map is durable, waterproof, bright colored, and relatively readable. It has a topographical map of all Japan at a scale of 1:2,200,000, city/suburb maps of the Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka areas at scales of 1:750,000 and 1:250,000, and more detailed city maps of Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Central Kobe at scales of 1:15,000, 1:17,500 and 1:20,000. All the maps show roads, airports, train stations, parks and other features. I did find the lack of a dedicated seperate map of the Tokyo subway and lack of information about bus and ferry routes quite disappointing. The larger train and metro lines are clearly shown but I find the station locations hard to see. The main roads and train lines are easy to spot but their names are almost unreadable due to insufficient contrast. Overall, the best map I could find.

Great map, gave us the information we needed to help plan our trip.

As a first overview -- with the exception of the city plans (four cities), there is not much detail on the road system. The map lists the expressways, and the main highways and/or roads, as well as railroads. However, details such as route number or names is mostly not given. Other than for the names of the larger cities, the printing is minuscule. The map has a useful and easily read legend for a variety of services. The road map overlays a topographical map that includes rivers, lakes and mountains. Parks and other significant sites of interest are included. The islands and prefectures are clearly named. I consider it a well made map that is a good balance between the level of detail and a convenient size.

terribly disappointed, this is a terrible map to try to read cities and towns so you can plan a trip, TERRIBLE. will be returning this. have had other maps of Japan that you are able to read the names of the cities
