GT5 as a fitness watch
With advent of smartphones, the function of wristwatches has been mostly relegated to that of a jewellery. Now that we have smartness built into watches, they can additionally compliment the smartness of the phones and not try to duplicate them for phones are always handy. I cannot understand why anybody needs to duplicate any functionality that is available on a much bigger screen. The complimentary functionalities are mostly health and fitness related as the smartwatch is more in contact with our body. Keeping these factors in mind, my criteria to buy a smartwatch are looks, fitness/health functions and long battery life.Huawei GT series watches perfectly fit all these 3 criteria for me. And that’s the reason why I have continued with Huawei, upgrading from GT2 to GT5. Looks wise, it is hands down far superior to other smartwatches. The metallic octagonal design, great material and built quality with attention to finer details, it has a very premium look. As compared, the ugly looking Samsung watch or toy Apple watch are nowhere near.Huawei claims a battery life of 14 days with optimal usage. And I have no reason to believe that such long battery life can last for years as my 4-year-old GT2 still gives me 10-12 days of life. In 4 days since I have started using this GT5 watch, the battery has gone down by only 30%.Coming to fitness tracking, I can see that the sensors and software both have major improvement since GT2. GT2 GPS has mostly worked fine for my running distances except for the nearby park track which has dense coverage of trees. On days, it goes off by more 10%. But GT5, in my 3-4 runs so far in this track, has accurately predicted the distance within few meters for a 3K. (See attached screenshot comparison). It also provides some additional information like ground contact time, vertical oscillation, and left/right balance during running. The UI within the watch has also improved a lot to provide more analysis which earlier was only available in the Health app on my phone. The heart-rate monitoring, stress monitoring, SPO2 monitoring and sleep tracking also have improved (though GT2 too was doing an adequate job on these). ECG and blood-pressure are still not available in the GT5 version. It has a skin temperature sensor as well.Among other features, the UI is much more vibrant and fluidic. There are many more watch faces available, including some dynamic ones. The call and message functionalities appear to be similar to that of GT2. You can receive calls (connected to phone through Bluetooth) and probably can make calls from a limited list (though I have never felt the need to make a call from the watch in 4 years). Messages (whatsapp, FB messenger, SMS) can be viewed but photos and videos do not load. There is probably new feature to make some standard replies but I have not explored. It has some storage available to copy songs into the watch and can connect to Bluetooth headphones. On the negative side, due to restrictions on Huawei, few functionalities are limited. You need to download the Health app that is required to connect the watch to your smartphone from Huawei site. It is not available in Google Playstore. Petal maps and payment app are blocked. ECG functionality that, is available with GT5 Pro, is also blocked in India.Overall if you are look for a smartwatch that looks like a watch, does a good job tracking your fitness and does not require charging every evening, then there is simply no other option available at this price range. But if you want to duplicate smartphone features like mindless reel scrolling etc, then this is not for you.As for upgradation from previous Huawei GT watches, those who already have GT3/GT4 watches and are happy with sensor outputs, there is hardly any major addition in functionality to go for the upgrade. If you have a GT2, you will notice some changes and hence may consider going for it.

Great watch with minor nuisances
Weight, display, battery, bluetooth calling, notifications, etc are as good as advertized. Five stars for doing well what it's supposed to do.- Comfortable to be worn whole day. Strap has holes close enough for little adjustments to suit your wrist- Petal Maps does not work in India so offline maps on the watch do not work. A paid app (Navigation [Huaweir Watches]) for 200 rs is available to show google maps navigation notifications on the watch. Excercise route can be viewed on Google Map in the Huawei Health app but not on the watch.- Huawei Health app is not available on Play Store and has to be downloaded separately. It does not integrate with Google Fit or other apps and Android Health Connect does not recognize Huawei Health.- Huawei Health app keeps measuring steps while driving. Turning off "Physical Activity" permission to the app fixes the problem.- When in workout mode, other apps or home screen cannot be accessed. If you have to open some other screen, you have to stop the workout.- Training Load feature is useful which gives a score for how much you excercised in a week, similar to PAI on Amazfit or Heart Points on Google Fit. I personally like Training Load better than the two.- GPS is good enough, don't expect accuracy within 4-5 feet. Maybe it's the same for all watches, I don't know.

Watch GT5 is a good option
Huawei health app is not available in Google Play store. I found available in samsung app store. All available functionalitiea are quite accurate compared to other high end smart watches.Battery backup is very nice.Petal Maps which is available in 146 countries is not available in India so offline maps on the watch do not work.Offline map which is OpenStreetMap can be downloaded using health app. Along with GPS this is useful to keep track of outdoor activities.GPS works perfectly to track walking and running route. This gives additional accuracy of steps and pace.Sleep tracking works excellent.NFC doesn't work in India.Overall a good watch for my use.

Warning: Key Features not supported Without a Huawei Phone!
If you don’t own a Huawei mobile, do not buy the Huawei GT 5 Watch! Many key features simply won’t work without a Huawei phone. The Huawei Health app isn’t even available in India, and there’s zero official support—no email, no phone number, nothing.Although I am a IT Professional, I had to spend four hours searching for a compatible. For a regular user, this would be a nightmare. Even after finding an app, the experience was terrible—password resets don’t work, and the app itself is poorly designed. While the hardware is good, the software experience is frustrating and unreliable. Avoid unless you are deep into the Huawei ecosystem!

Huawei GT 5
I'm very happy with the product (got it on 28 Feb, 2025). The battery charge still shows 24%.My only suggestion is that Huawei could have used a different icon/symbol to inform of incoming emails. I often mistake the incoming email message as a Whats App message.

Very very accurate. A watch for fitness lovers
A quick review. I have the Amazfit balance. While, it has more features, like voice typing, callling etc through zepp flow, it let's you down in therms of accuracy and display quality. That's where the GT 5 is far superior. Crisp display, extremely accurate a great UI, super data for fitness lovers. They do have a physical keyboard. So you can type in msg. I thought I'd be able to send a voice msg by pressing the mic icon. But it says, that's open only to huawei phones. That is the only disappointment. Hope they can fix this for Indian users. Good watch faces and customizable. All in all a fitness delight
