It's All In The Chemistry
Outstanding film. The DVD looks great, the box is nice. Very good value for money! Definitely would recommend to anyone who loves this movie.Todd Field did an incredible job directing, and the cast knocked it out of the park. The book the movie is based on is an incredible piece of literature, so it's surprising to see that the movie lived somewhat up to its standard."You either have chemistry with someone or you don't. You can't.[...] It's not something you can work on, you either have it or not. I felt lucky in that it was easy for me to feel chemistry towards Cate- Not only because you know- she's...Cate."Rooney Mara

Lovely to look at but missing chemistry
Lovely story and with a beautiful post-war filter to the filming. The story is credible and the sub plot about a mother losing any form of custody of her child during divorce due to being gay is incredibly sad. However there is a lack of chemistry between the two main characters. I also wondered about the age gap between the two, which must have been around 15-20 years and didnt form any part of the story

Spoke to my soul.
Simply gorgeous! Kate achingly awoke from deep within my soul the emptiness and longing that resides. Her painfully honest and realistic portrayal of Carol in this film was alluring and provocative, terribly seductive and emotionally stirring. Such a beautiful performance of love and passion. I want to despise her for making me aware of what's been dormant in my heart for so long but now feels simply like the grieving of an eternal loss and absence. But how can I fault her for doing so well exactly what the role was intended to accomplish? No one could have played it better! I want her happy ending.

Don't bother watching this movie, read the book instead.
In order to be drawn into any story, empathy for the characters must be developed, however likeable or unlikeable they may be. This adaptation of The Price of Salt is so boring, the characters so wooden, there is zero opportunity to care for any of the relationships in this film. The book this movie is based on, was written by a lesbian in 1952, so she would have been immersed in the stifling attitudes of that time. She based her story loosely on a moment in her own life, when she was working in a very well known New York department store and took an order from a woman who she was instantly attracted to. But Patricia Highsmith was no ordinary author. She also wrote The Talented Mr Ripley (check out the superior French movie version, Matt Damon does not do the role justice) and Strangers on a Train (directed by Alfred Hitchcock), just to mention a few of the many adaptations of her books. So her incredible ability at story telling is well documented, and also, hers is the first ever lesbian love story that has a happy ending. But this movie completely misses the mark. The themes of the book have not been translated well at all. I fear Ms. Highsmith would be rolling in her grave had she seen this sorry excuse, given the screenwriter Phyllis Nagy was her friend for the last 8 years of her life. And I think the director, Todd Haynes has watched too many bad lesbian movies. His portrayal of the growing love between Carol and Therese is just a series of glances and looks, with a few self conscious touches, culminating in one sex scene, before, of course, they are found out and have to separate. The men are treated stereotypically as well, as if the women are drawn to each other because the men they are involved with are so controlling. Women fall in love with other women all the time, and it's not because they aren't capable of liking and caring for men. This important nuance is nowhere to be found and instead the characters come across as mean and heartless.Highsmith's themes questioned morality and identity and she went to some dark places in order to explore peoples' motivations. There is no such exploration in this film and by the time the ending finally comes, who really cares?

Masterpiece
Haven't read the book but I loved to see the interpretation of two great actresses like Rooney Mara ad Cate Blanchett. Direction is great too.

Most lesbian film ever
This is a great movie and such a typical lesbian film filled with hours of them just staring at each other and doing nothing about it

One of the better lesbian movies
The vast majority of period lesbian movies have terrible endings with the two women being forced apart by society, friends, family etc. This one is somewhat different. Yes there are the usual forces trying to keep them apart. It's set in New York during the Lavender scare when being gay was equated with Communism and yet these two women seem to survive. I won't spoil the ending but it's one of the better ones, Cate Blanchett is at her usual stellar best.
