Yes. Amazon carries the regular cat dancer without the mount. My cat preferred me to play with her so I never used the mount.

Q: Can you take it out of the mount to play with cat and then put it back in the mount?

Yup, It has a snap closing case, Just un-snap it, And play away. Plus you can buy the original cat dancer 101, to replace it when it gets worn. Great toy.

Q: What’s the difference between the original deluxe and the updated deluxe version that have a small difference in price?

I'm not sure what the original deluxe version was except that the one I bought many years ago you weren't able to attach it to the wall like this one. Once attached, with those removable 3m tapes, which are included, you can open it and remove the cat toy and hold it to play with kitty. My cat Ava goes crazy either way. She loves it! Hope this helps.
