The General / Three Ages

Bought this DVD because this film was on a list for ten best ever silent films, and it certainly is that. Of course, Mr. Keaton had a genius for comedy & was a remarkable athlete. I understand he was also fascinated with mechanical devices -- choreographing chase scenes between locomotives is quite a feat. Background scenes were quite beautiful -- filmed in the Pacific Northwest. Fantastic musical score featuring popular tunes from the Civil War era, as well as a Snidley Whiplash-type motif, which is great fun. Great attention to authenticity in the costumes, which I think is rather unusual for the time. Any silent film lover -- or film lover in general -- is guaranteed to love it.

Kino/Lorber/Lobster always do a great job with their digital restorations of silent films, and this package is no exception. I like that they provide not one, but TWO different film scores to go with this film. The previous version I had was accompanied only with random ragtime piano music. Music that fits the action adds SO much to the experience! It is too bad The General was an expensive flop at the box office, since it robbed Keaton of his artistic freedom, but it still ranks as his masterpiece.

An outstanding feature film by Buster Keaton! The train sequences are thrilling! This filmmaker cuts no corners as witnessed by the fate of the General. Really engaging silent film by a master comedian and filmmaker.

Have watched it many times; plan to watch it many more!

A gem of a movie that needs to be watched over and over again to appreciate the brilliance in it. Excellent digital processing to increase the quality of picture and sound. Bluray is a win every time compared to a DVD.

Two of the best movies ever made, I highly recommend getting these Blu Rays!

I loved this film. Inventive action sequences ... numerous chase scenes, the train into the river are spectacular in any era. The comedy sequences are equally as good and done with restraint, and not just mindless slapstick. And the quality of the print is stellar, Criterion Collection quality. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to see one of the best silent films, actually of the best films of any era.

If you're a fan of Buster Keaton, these are two of his best. A lot of people have heard of The General but Three Ages is an equal.
