Silent Heroes: The Bravery & Devotion of Animals in War Paperback – April 1, 2010

I would like to share a book with others. I recently purchased for my husband, the book Silent Heroes: The Bravery & Devotion of Animals in War by Evelyn Le Chene.The book tells the true stories of a selected few animals whose bravery during various wars was an inspiration to the men around them. Le Chene, in her excellent, well researched book, tells the tales of various dogs, cats, horses, pigeons and even a large bear who, in spite of his fear under fire, went on to help load the guns, and who gladly lent his weight and strength to his human companions.One delightful touch was to hear that loyalty went both ways. Like Bamse, a dog and a full member of a Norwegian minesweeper's crew. He stood all of six feet tall when he put his front feet on the shoulders of his sailing companions. One day he fell overboard. Immediately he was followed by a number of sailors who dived into the freezing sea to rescue him.This is a terrific book for animal lovers.

AN ABSOLUTE MUST HAVE FUNTASTIC BOOK FOR THE TRUE HISTORY BUFF TIRED OF THE SAME OLD SAME OLD TOLD & RETOLD POORLY WRITTEN HYSTERICAL HISTORY! A+!

A very well thought out book giving insight that the men and their 'companions' had to endure. covering around 150 years in the many different conditions and theaters of war. The animals pigeons,dogs,cats,horses,donkeys even a bear, and the part they played in some cases having profound effects on the various battles and in other cases supporting and keeping the moral up of the service men/women and also giving the sick comfort.The book is a major example demonstrating that we maybe underestimate the many animals around us and their loyalty and dedication when the going gets tough. Where possible there are pictures of some of theses animals in action including a parachuting dog! One can only imagine how many more animals have helped in the past and even now with rats doing mine/ied clearance.The lives of military personnel and civilians have been well served in the past, present and no doubt the future by animals which we sometimes take for granted. A book for teenagers/adult which is even a springboard to get more detailed books about the individual animals and no doubt it will encourage younger children to hear /read the stories if shown the pictures in the book.

Make sure you have the Kleenex box at hand because some of these stories/accounts are a little sad....however, its an interesting little book & would make a fab gift for anyone interested in animals/pet lovers.

so intresting this book tells so many stories that felt hard to put it down. would recommend this to anyone
