Pirates Licorice / Salmiak pastiller
For those who are unfamiliar with proper Danish salty licorice, one should try this. I grew up on it, but it is hard to find in the US.

Like a pirate in your mouth
These are gloriously disgusting. If you don’t know if you like salmiac, you should probably start with the smallest quantity. Otherwise, you should buy whichever quantity has lowest unit price at the moment (since they fluctuate and vary wildly). I initially got these as a (literal) gag gift for someone, but I actually liked them, and I’ve reordered them for myself multiple times. I also have low blood pressure because of medications I’m on, so I’m eating these to excess in part in the hopes that they’ll balance that out. I have yet to try any other brands of salmiakki, but Haribo Piratos were the cheapest, so they’re what I chose to start with. People have asked about the ingredients and nutrition facts, so here goes… The label says (in German): Ingredients: • sugar • glucose syrup • starch • brown sugar syrup • aroma • licorice extract (3%) • table salt • coating agent (white and yellow beeswax, carnauba wax) Without synthetic coloring. Made in the EU. May contain traces of milk and wheat. Per 100g (half package) 323 calories <0.5g fat 0.1g of which saturated fat 80g carbohydrate 49g of which sugar <0.5g protein 0.9g salt Note, however, that the front of the package says: 7.99% salmiac [ammonium chloride] …which is also salt (just not *sodium* chloride), for 8.89g of salt altogether (per 100g). The FDA daily value of salt (sodium) is 2.3g, and the full package is nearly 8x that (if you include salmiac). The reason Piratos are 7.99% salmiac is that 8% or more is regulated in the EU (because high-salmiac diets have similar effects to high-sodium diets). FWIW gluten is a protein, not a carbohydrate, and this is nearly 50% sugar by weight, so it is not suitable for low-carbohydrate diets (such as keto). These are certified as vegetarian by the European Vegetarian Union, but the coating contains beeswax, so they’re not technically vegan, if that’s something you care about.

Not as advertised
The bags are actually only 175 grams each, not 200 as advertised. Important to know when you are comparing prices when ordering.

BEST Salmiak (salt) Licorice money can buy.
I remember buying this when I was in Denmark in the late 90's. I bought tons of it and brought tons back to Cali. Occasionally you can find this online but not always made in Germany. When I saw this I immediately ordered 6 bags hoping it was as good as I remembered. OMG this is absolutely, positively the best salt licorice ever made. Stock up on TP if you buy this you're gonna' need it. ( The best sweet licorice is Snore got 8 bags of them this week also).

Excellent licorice!!
This licorice is excellent. Maybe a bit too strong for some but I think they are perfect! I also love the Haribo salty licorice pretzels and the Pingvin Tom Heksehyl Zout Salty Sticks Filled with Salmiak. I keep a pill bottle filled with these in my kitchen and when I go for a walk or bike ride I always grab them for a quick licorice snack.

Love them
Only problem is, they cost about 4 times as much as back home
