A good basic text
This is a good basic book on producing a literature review. Clearly aimed at undergraduates with no previous experience in assessing research reports, it adopts a cookbook approach, which is clearly what its intended readership wants. It advocates transparency in reporting how the articles to be reviewed were selected, and strongly suggests using one or other of the "tools" available on the web for evaluating individual research reports. It is on rather firmer ground when describing the assessment of quantitative research than when assessing reports of qualitative research. It advocates becoming familiar with the various forms of qualititative research, which it describes sketchily, without suggesting any differences in the approach one might adopt to them.Similarly, it covers the treatment of theoretical literature rather sketchily.Overall: a good book for beginners

gives the basics
I used the book as a textbook for a graduate course and it provided the basics, but failed to present information to understand the purpose or function of the literature review.

Helpful!
The book gives clear, easy to follow guidelines and really helped me to complete my dissertation. It provides a step by step procedure that gave me a lot of confidence in what I was doing by allowing me to focus on content in the knowledge that the structure of my work was ok.

Needed for School
I needed this book for a class, so it obviously isn't something I enjoy reading. But it arrived within the time that it said it would.

Great for keeping you on track
Great book for keeping you on track with your literature review. I would advise you read this book/make notes before you even start planning your review then use it to enhance your note

Essential reading for any nursing student
I have nothing but praise for Helen Aveyard and her books. Ive read quite a few recently and this one comes very top of my list. Easy to understand and access for consulting individual concepts, well organised, written in plain language and not goobledigook! If you are a student within healthcare and you are undertaking a degree - this book will become a good friend to you - worth every penny!
