The Blackthorn is a native, deciduous shrub, which grows to approx 3 metres. The creamy-white flowers are produced in early spring, before the leaves, and are pollinated by bees. These are followed by sloe berries in autumn, which can be used for preserves, but are more commonly used to flavour gin. The berries are less bitter if picked after the first hard frost of the season. The density of the blackthorn provides excellent cover for birds and other wildlife. Prefers a sunny site.
