Lone Rider: The First British Woman to Motorcycle Around the World Review: Wonderful - This is the story Ive been waiting thirty years to read- after my own adventures at about that age. That sense of becoming someone outside the frame of reference of most people?: her words about that resonated so strongly with me. Amazing to have that expressed so clearly. And so well written- the pacing was perfect; the details just enough but not overwhelming; the mixture of personal development (including the trials of love and life) and adventure diary exactly right. And so, so, SO refreshing to hear the journey from the perspective of a woman and not from the privileged perspective of a man... I can't say enough good things about this story. I will be reading it again! And I'd love to hear what came/comes next in Elspeth's life! Review: Wonderful book - A terrific story by an incredible woman. This is not some sugar coated tale. Elspeth tells it all. A brutal and wondrous story all in one.

This book was interesting. Found it easy reading and hard to put down. What made it most interesting is I have visited some of the places.

Elspeth Beard is the hero I didn't know I had.
This is an absolutely riveting account of the author's trip around the world on her trusty BMW motorcycle at a time when women didn't ride motorcycles. If you ride, you won't be able to resist this tale. Even if you don't, there's plenty here, Among the themes: rugged adventure, culture clashes, encounters with sexism, ingenuity of all kinds, physical resilience, romantic entanglement and human connection of all kinds. The author is a triple threat as a hjighly skilled motorcyclist, an award-wining architect and a highly engaging writer. As a devotee of travel on two wheels, I can't believe I was unaware of Elspeth Beard, a true pioneer in the world of motorcycling, until I came upon "Lone Rider." As always with good books, I was sad when this one came to an end. My sadness was made more acute in this instance because it felt like I lived this book as I listened to it in my car over two weeks. It took me about the amount time until the beginning of riding season to shake that feeling.

Spellbinding
I have known of Elspeths journey, and this book for a while, but only now got around to reading it. Though it is now almost 40 years since her epic journey, the book reads as though it could have been written yesterday. Surely testament to Elspeths skill as a writer, but also to her character. This book is a refreshing change of perspective in a genre dominated by men, and lacks the phony bravado or machismo often found in the male versions of similar adventures. Her writing is honest, and direct, as well as empathetic and relatable. She is formidable and vulnerable, and incredibly likable! . Elspeth weaves her personal internal journey together with the 35000 mile external journey brilliantly. The narrative is captivating, and a proper page turner. One of those perfect books where you cannot wait to get to the end, but at the same time dread the thought of the book and the adventure being over.

A really marvelous story
I love this book and highly recommend it. What a terrific adventure she had riding her motorcycle around the world. This is not something I would ever do, and especially after reading this. I loved the last chapter when you found out what she did with her life. I don’t want to spoil it for you. She probably should have lived the rest of her life with some of the recklessness she did by taking this trip. Go with your heart.

A Wonderful Travel Story, filled with trials and growth
I really enjoyed this book. Elspeth reminds me of Katniss Everdeen in her stern approach to love and relationships, however I found myself crying uncontrollably by its tender, but bittersweet end. This book is a diary of adventures across the world in the 1980s on a motorbike. It has experiences first hand that only a woman rider would know or understand. I felt this is in my bones despite being born a few years after she arrived home in London in 84. This one started as fun book about the road and traveling; but ended on a much more serious note. The novel is ultimately a reminder of life's unforgiving nature. Life is to be grasped and lived, and there will always be decisions to be made. Excellent read.
