THAI LOAS can't live without mortar and pestle. Use this clay mortar and wood pestle set for lighter duty kitchen jobs like papaya salad and nam prik chili paste. Quickly prepare curry pastes, marinades, pound garlic and peppercorns. Make spice rubs, tapenades, pestos and vinaigrette dressing. Made from beautiful natural clay, it's both functional and attractive. The extra deep cone-shaped bowl makes this mortar ideal for combining and crushing salad ingredients, so that the flavors blend and absorb into each other. The wood pestle is extra-long, making pounding easy and efficient. A good Thai mortar and pestle is a relatively inexpensive item. These mortars are handmade from natural clay in Thailand. Colors and dimensions vary slightly, with rough patches on the interior and exterior of the mortar CLEAN AND DRY AS ORTHER POT

Perfect for soft crushing prep
Perfect for CRUSHING,mixing and infusing softer ingrediences used in Thai and other asian preparations. DO NOT expect this tool to GRIND hard ingredience like rice or wheat to flour, or toasted whole spices to powder.

Huge, authentic.
We were surprised at how big the mortar was. The pestle looks like it could be used as a beater’s bat in Quidditch. Our Cambodian-American DiL (who received it for Christmas) rates it as two thumbs up and authentic. Now we just need papayas to be in season so we can have papaya salad.

Horrible quality
I was hoping to make somtam today. Well, that will not be happening with this poor excuse of a mortar and pestle. The item feels like it was finish with a handful of sandy grit glued to every surface. Huge holes and defects all over, making it 100% assured you will never get it clean. And the pestle is very poorly made.Do not waste your money on this like I did. Also, this seems to be a normal occurrence, because there's an exhortation printed on the receipt asking you contact the seller before doing anything else. And the receipt is labeled "defect". Weird.
