Forage radish is an annual, broadleaf member of the brassica family. Unlike the radishes grown in vegetable gardens, forage radishes produce very large roots and abundant leaf mass. They’re also known as “tillage radish” thanks to their large roots that “till” deep into the ground, naturally loosening and aerating the soil. Forage radishes provide excellent forage for wildlife. They also act as a cover crop and green manure. Scientific name: Raphanus sativus ‘Groundhog’ Seeding Rate: 12 lbs. / Acre

The kudzu defender
What I use this stuff for is probably completely unique and novelIn Georgia we have this evil pesky stuff called kudzu. You will work your fingers bloody getting the true root out of the ground and then it’ll still come back if one tiny root is left usually sneaking growth over winter. But I ran an experiment. I decided to bulk the root system over in the area with these guysLow and behold, it has shown huge promise. It isn’t fast, it’s still hard work, but these guys take up the space in the ground and manage to hold their positions from the kudzu invaders pretty well!My neighbors laughed until the disaster yard of my new house started looking great this year and staying kudzu free.It brings new meaning to cover crop or beneficial winter crop. Come spring, I pull and compost the really big ones and let most of the others just rot in ground.Love love love this stuff!

Planted half the bag in 2.75, 22 foot rows. We are using them as ground cover and to build up organic matter in our very heavy Missouri soil. Germination was quick and a very high percentage. We had 2 down pours 3 days after planting and even the seeds that flooded into the isles germinated. The rows were covered with plants in under a week. Will be buying more to plant next year in the rest of the garden.

I was happy with the plants it produced although the radish part was smaller than expected. I use it as a cover crop in my home garden along with buckwheat and red clover. It does help the soil. I will buy again.

Best covercrop for hard soil.
I read about oilseed radish, forage radish, groundhog radish-all the same thing. This radish was able to push deep into my hard clay soil and create funnels to take the rare rain deeper into the earth. The foliage is so water rich that I was able to weedwhack it while wearing shorts and a tank top without getting painfully pelted. I just left the foliage on the ground and the radish in the ground to decompose and add organic matter to my beige colored soil. I now plant this around the basins of all my trees so they’ll take the rain deeper too. Also the foliage grows big and blocks the other weeds and attracts tons of lady bugs so take that aphids! I am thrilled with this covercrop and will be using it for a long time to get my soul back to a happy place. My favorite covercrop.

These things are growing like gang busters
These things are growing like gang busters. Some of the radishes are 3-4 inches in diameter after being in the ground 6wks. I haven’t pulled them up to see how long they are
