Those supports are one inch in diameter

Q: What is the actual width? There are two different answers in the description. I need 20" wide.

The width is adjustable. There are 4 or 5 settings using the little buttons.

Q: does it work on wooden floors?

The suction cups on the back legs didn't work on my mothers old fashioned white diamond and blue flower design tile floor. We took the suction cups off the back and put on the two extra rubber cups that were included. It seemed to work fine, but she didn't like the whole toilet rail setup so we returned it.

Q: so there is no screwing into the toilet seat?

You do not screw in toilet seat. This is standalone. It is very sturdy. Adjustable height and width.
