If you enjoy diving into comparative grammars then you will enjoy this book as well as this author. Very engaging and informative. He covers other languages as well if Romance languages aren’t your first choice. Highly recommend.

Robertson B. Kunz has written a masterly 557-page compilation of all aspects of Romance Languages. Backgrounds trace the development of each language and the influences upon them with an eye to their various dialects. A very clear summary of the grammar involved - often surpassing what's found in the average textbook. The author even took on Rumanian with all its divergences from the other Romance languages, often necessitating additional pages of explanation. As another example, this time for Portuguese, he outlined the differences between European Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese and even African Portuguese. An added bonus is a Romance language conversation across 13 Romance languages. All with lovely illustrations. Brilliant.

This comparative grammar includes what all comparative grammars should include, but usually don't, and that is a history of the languages covered in the text. These language histories include origins and development of the language, influences from other languages, and cultural information such as literature, language revival, and other fascinating facts. This section covers the first half of the book. Another key feature of this book is the large print. No more squinting trying to read smaller than a 12-point font. The second half of the book focuses on grammar. For each topic there is a clear description followed by several sample sentences for each language. In addition, there are over 30 pages of common expressions in a separate section near the end of the book. Another important feature is the inclusion of Romanian and Catalan, two important Romance languages often ignored. Romanian is so different from the other Romance languages (you'll understand why if you read its language history in the first part of the book), which makes its inclusion important for language lovers. A bonus feature is a section that translates 50 English sentences pertaining to the culture of the region into 13 Romance languages. I highly recommend this book for anyone who: 1) knows English and is interested in the region. The language histories and 50 bonus sentences are interesting and informative on their own; 2) knows any one or more of the languages covered (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Romanian, Catalan), and would like to learn another of these languages; 3) knows Italian and would like to learn one or more of the other languages spoken in Italy; 4) wants to learn one or more of these languages; 5) is studying linguistics; 6) is brave enough to try to learn all six languages at once!

I feel pretty mocked by the description of the book (probably written by Ai), as the book only has so many pages because - the print is about double the size of a normal book - almost half of the book consists of superficial hence boring history accounts for each language (also probably written by AI) - the book is filled with huge and completely unnecessary images (almost every second page, at least half the page, AI generated) Also, this book does not in any way present a valuable method to learn these languages, which the author claims in his description. There are neither "stunning charts, tables or diagrams", nor vocabulary nor pronunciation or in depth grammar explanation. All one could say is it could be of some use for someone (like me) who already speaks several of the presented languages and wants to see the comparison.
