Fargo: Season 1 [Blu-ray]

An awesome series
This is a series that is modeled after, and loosely, spun off of, the movie of the same name. There is actually a tie-in to the movie that is involved in one of the plot lines. As with the movie, this is a very untrue story set mostly in MN, in the towns of Bemidji and Duluth. It stars Martin Freeman (from the series Sherlock and The Hobbit movies) as Lester Nygaard, and Billy Bob Thornton as Lorne Malvo, a hitman who crosses paths with Lester in a hospital after Lester is decked by his high-school bully, Sam Hess. Malvo suggests that the bully should be killed, which Lester neither endorses nor rejects, and because Lester does not say no, Malvo ends up killing the bully which leads to an investigation of Lester, and things go downhill from there. Hess was loosely mob-connected, and the mob (out of Fargo) ends up trying to find out what happened to him, which also causes problems for Lester. The series also stars Allison Tolman as Deputy Molly Solverson, a police deputy from Bemidji, who is the only competent officer in the department, and Colin Hanks as Officer Gus Grimly, an officer from Duluth who has a run-in with Malvo. There are several recognizable stars among the supporting cast including Bob Odenkirk, Kate Walsh, Joey King, Oliver Platt, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Stephen Root, and Keith Carradine. For those who get the Blu-Ray, the extras include audio commentaries on three episodes which include the showrunner Noah Hawley and rotating members of the cast, a two-part making-of documentary, a discussion with Hawley and the cast members about creating the show, a feature about the character of Malvo, and deleted scenes. Some of the sets also come with a Fargo-themed beanie.Overall, the series is great. It tells one long story and is more like a 10-hour movie than it is a TV show. There is a lot of violence and some sexual content, so it is definitely not family-friendly. Freeman is wonderful as Lester who is kind of like William H. Macy's character in the movie, but definitely, not a carbon copy, and Billy Bob Thornton dominates every scene he is in. It is a bit hilarious for those of us who actually live in MN to see what cities they decided to set the show in. As anyone who lives here knows, Bemidji and Duluth are nowhere near each other and there is no way that a quick trip can be made between the two cities, especially in the winter. And, of course, the show does do the very over-the-top accents just like the movie did. It is a great crime drama that has a similar tone to the movie but is definitely its own story and not just a remake or reboot of the movie. It is definitely worth checking out.

The best TV show on television
I am writing this review after finishing the "Who Shaves the Barber" episode, and I must say that not since Breaking Bad have I come across such a well-made, clever television show. Of course Fargo being a dark comedy is not of the same genre as Breaking Bad; it is, however, of the same caliber of film/television making. SPOILER ALERT: I think this one scene is the perfect example of how brilliantly made this show is: one of the characters shoots up an office, but the clever part is that the scene is shot not from inside the building but from outside and all we see are the windows and the camera follows the shots from outside the window (you can't see inside, but you can hear it) as the shooter makes his way through the office from the first to the third floor. I can imagine seeing this way of shooting a scene in a movie but not a TV show. I always felt Breaking Bad went to such lengths to shoot a scene as the creators of Fargo are doing now. Just brilliant. It feels like I am watching a film and not just a TV show on FX.At first I was a bit put off by the Minnesota accents (I am originally from Minnesota). I just didn't think the actors, especially Freeman, really got the accent right. However, I believe that in this episode either I am used to it or they have gotten their accents closer to the real thing. I had really liked Freeman in Sherlock and the Hobbit, and I am liking him more and more as this show progresses. Billy Bob Thornton is as most people in their reviews is brilliant. The deputy Molly is one of my favorite characters. There are just so many famous actors in this show from the police chief to Molly's father. You will even see an appearance by Key and Peele. The acting is stellar.I also think the concept of the picked on weakling taking revenge on everyone else who has belittled him is very appealing. It reminds me of Breaking Bad and how Walter White transformed from this meek chemistry teacher to Heisenberg. You can see Lester Nygard changing from this weakling to someone who is in control of the situation and who becomes the manipulator rather than the manipulated. It's very entertaining.

Fantastic drama, acting, writing...great series!
I watched this series on FX when it came out this spring. I missed some episodes and had to use xfinity to watch them later. I started at the beginning and kept watching it over and over again. I just couldn't stop. The darkness of the whole story, fantastic writing and acting made me kind of obsessive about watching. I am glad I watched it multiple times, because there are little details that I caught with each new viewing. I also really loved how they gave little hints to tie the series to the movie, besides the obvious connection (you'll find out). I can't wait to get the DVDs now. Oh, this was very critically praised, which I had no idea of when I was doing all that watching. DO NOT MISS THIS!!!Update: I have watched this series many times...a great way to pass the time on a slow day, and have had many of those this year. Anyway, was wondering if anyone else found some "errors" in the series.1) The first scene with Lester and his wife, she eats her soup with her right hand when shot from the front, but from behind she is eating her soup left handed.2) When Gus is talking to his daughter just before he pulls Malvo over for running the stop sign, she is passing along Vikings scores, giving the impression that it is Monday Night Football, yet this is all happening in mid January (according to the video from episode 3). Also, in the interrogation at his arrest, he is accused of being pulled over on a Tuesday night. This doesn't fit.3) Hess's son gets his collar bone broken in episode 2, but just a couple days later is out shooting his brother in the butt with a crossbow, no sign of injury.Does anyone else have any bloopers/errors that they noticed? These don't take away the quality one bit, just observations!
