Firmer gouges are for hand or mallet use. Building a log house or a totem pole? This is the tool that will do the job. The 6 inch hardwood handles are finished with a leather cap to withstand mallet impact. The thick, high-carbon steel blades are capable of holding up under hard usage. 3/4", #8 sweep

Seems like a very well-made tool
I got this chisel to do a certain job that was much less demanding than making anything that was artful: I needed to trim some wood from the striking post of a wooden garden gate that had sagged over the years and was rubbing a lot. I bought this gouge and a good wooden mallet and that did the job. The gouge did need to be sharpened before I could use it, and I did the best I could with the tools I had...and got a pretty good job for what I needed. The brand mark says Buck Brothers, and I'm assuming that that's the Buck Knife Buck brothers, but I could be wrong. The steel is hard--I can tell you that. I've sharpened a lot of knives and I know tough steel when I work with it. The leather pad on the end appears to be well made, and it withstood some pretty hard banging on the job I did and didn't seem to be phased at all--no dents or rollovers. And the wooden handle is long enough and thick enough to really get a good grip on. I call it a honey, and I'm glad to have it.

Excellent Tool, Excellent Quality
I am familiar with gouges of this size and other tools like this one. Of course you would have to sharpen this gouge because to ship it otherwise could present a danger to the customer who opens the box. Gouge sharpening procedures are easily discoverable on the internet and are very easy to do with a sharpening stone. This is a fine tool of excellent quality, and is far better than the price reflects. Many of these larger gouges can sell for 3 to 4 times as much and without an appreciable difference in quality. I highly recommend this tool to be used with proper safety precautions. It is not a tool for a child.

Buck Brothers Gouge
I thought I was buying a gouge made by Difenbacher, or some house brand. It's a Buck Bros. gouge that is terribly dull when you get it. I've sharpened it, and it's fine. I don't know what else to expect given the very low price. I shouldn't be I guess, but I am somewhat dissapointed. It's a serviceable tool for $18. It is what it is.

Quality tool. Reminds me of the tools we used in high school work shop before everything was made in China.
