Trans-Kin: A Guide for Family and Friends of Transgender People

This book helped me understand and cope
I borrowed this book and liked it so much I bought three copies of my own to loan to other people! It is divided up into sections, stories from transgender people, their families, significant others, friends, religious leaders, and allies. It is possible to simply read the section that applies to yourself, but I found the entire book helpful and encouraging. My favorite part of the book is the section written by an ally, The Most Reverend Bennett D. D. Burke. He tells of his wish to support LGBT people, and how he introduced himself at a meeting as he sat there in his priestly garb. He injected humor while introducing himself by saying, "Hi, my name is Bennett. I am bishop of......I get the feeling some of you are a bit puzzled, or even a bit put off by my presence or maybe it is just the way I am dressed. Allow me to explain. I identify as a priest. This is the way priests dress. I hope you won't make assumptions about me based only on the way I dress. I'll try hard to do the same for you." Folks in the room blinked, then laughed, as his introduction showed how he understood how trans folks want to be accepted on how they identify themselves and dress. This book was gentle, encouraging, and occasionally funny. I am very glad I read it.

Informative
I found the book to be informative and personal. It helps me to read stories from people who've shared their journey as transgender folks. It was pretty foreign to me and has helped me better understand what this community of people have to indure. Even though it's eye awakening, it breaks my heart to think about what these people have to go through day in and day out to become the person they were intended to be.

Voices from transgender persons, their family and friends
This is one of the best books on letting us into the lives and experiences of trans people and their friends. The voices are helpfully organized into groups: significant others, family, friends, allies, and transgender persons. There is an appendix containing valuable resources for further study. I happily recommend it to anyone wishing to understand the world of transgender persons.
