Stahlhelm: Evolution of the German Steel Helmet, Revised and Expanded Paperback – November 16, 2000

Good quick history. Hits the high points. Would have liked more detail and left questions, but overall gives a good broad-brush history of the Stahlhelm. And the author appreciates the helmet's significance as well.

Good book.

The first book I have read on the subject so far. I have only recently started collecting German helmets again and wanted to get some information on the subject. Overall the book is very good but it really requires colour photographs. A section on the various decals, once again in colour would have been useful. I did feel that the post war (1945) section was a bit sparse and could have been a bit more detailed. If space was an issue then maybe sections dealing with history in general could have been deleted. This is still a good book and I would recommend it.

It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. There's a lot of needless political/history recaps that most collectors probably are aware of before they buy the book and really don't need to read again. I still had some questions which remain unanswered; what are the manufacturer codes? Who built when? How many were made? How rare are these things today? How do you tell the fakes from the real ones? I realize that a lot of the records probably got burned during the last war, but there surely has to be something or someone who knows this. The illustrations and the photos were mediocre; - the whole thing looked like it was self-published. It's a good reference for the beginning collector, but for those of us who are looking for specialized material it's sort of useless.
