Comica XLR Lavalier Microphone Lavalier microphones are perfect for recording audio of a talent without showing a microphone on screen or setting up boom poles. One of the reasons I personally, however, have generally chosen to avoid them is because they generally use a 3.5mm connection meaning you need to connect them to a phone, or mobile recorder. I own a high-quality XLR audio interface called the Audient ID14 and always prefer to run microphones through it, because of its incredibly low noise, high-quality preamps; something that I couldn’t do with most lavalier microphones without purchasing a 3.5mm to XLR converter. Comica approached me and offered to send two of their XLR, phantom power, CVM-V02O2 lav microphones for review. This microphone eliminates the need to for carrying a portable battery powered recorder with a 3.5mm jack and instead allows you to plug straight into any audio interface just like a standard condenser microphone. Finally, I had a means of using a lavalier microphone that could plug directly into my audio interface, and record straight into Adobe Audition; allowing simple syncing into my videos given my one room indoor setup. This was really a lifesaver for me, because in the past whenever I wanted to use a lavalier microphone, I was restricted to plugging into my phone and having to email the file to myself, a hassle that led me to rarely use lav mics. My entire sponsored video for AnyTrans was recorded with the mic, which I will play a sample of here, raised to the levels of this video: As you can probably hear for yourself, the sound quality is really quite excellent for a $37 microphone, providing a clear, fairly warm sound. The microphone sounds a little thinner than I would like, but my point of reference is a Blue Spark in a sound-treated closet. For the best sound, I would recommend putting on headphones to monitor and try placing the mic in different parts of your shirt until you find an area that sounds best to you. Given that the microphone is omnidirectional you will need to record in a very quiet area if you don’t want background noises in your video. This is something I need to emphasize because a lot of people have the idea that they can simply through a lav on a talent and not expect to record everything in the environment. This isn’t much of a problem if you’re going for a more natural sound in your production, but always keep in mind that the recording space must always be considered when using a sensitive condenser microphone like this one. Also, expect a certain amount of noise when walking around with this, or any other lavalier microphone unless you purchase a special type of sticky material created to prevent said noise. I will link some of this tape in the description. Really, at this price point, you would be hard-pressed to find a better sounding lav mic that is also XLR. Another really excellent feature of this microphone is its ability to plug directly into a camera with XLR ports like a Canon C100, an ideal set up for documentary shooting. Something to consider for this though is the microphones chord is only about 6 feet long, so you would likely need a wide angles lens to pull off interview shooting. Alternatively, this could also be plugged into a high-quality XLR recorder like the Zoom H5, for optimum performance and ease of use; so long as you are willing to sync audio in post. Also, this microphone provides clear enough sound quality to serve as an extra mic for a podcast guest or something of the sort, and could easily be concealed in clothing. While I likely won’t be changing my format of voice over playing over footage, it’s good to know that I now have a high-quality option for recording talking head videos that work well for my set up of recording inside. Big thanks to Comica for sending me these microphones for review, but I want to make clear that I was in no way paid to make this video, and all opinions expressed here are my own. I would wholeheartedly recommend this microphone to anyone looking for a clear sounding XLR, lav under $50. I know it’s been a long time since consistent uploads, but I think I am finally back guys. I wish everyone a happy new year and am thrilled to think where this channel goes in 2018. Until next time, Christian from Erickson Films, signing out!

This is pretty much as described: a decent-quality omnidirectional lavalier mic, with a 6-foot cord and an XLR connector. I bought it for use with a little Mackie mixing board to record voice-overs on computer videos, and it's almost perfect for my application. Sound quality is very good. As usual for lavalier microphones it does take some experimentation to find the best placement for the mic with respect to each wearer's voice, because the sound does vary with placement. I'm not equipped to test if the frequency response is objectively flat, but it claims to be and that seems plausible listening to it. Sensitivity is good. A few things to be aware of. One, this is an omnidirectional mic. It picks up sounds from all directions. Depending on your situation that may be desirable, because it reduces the sensitivity to position, and it really puts the listener "there," hearing everything that's going on in the scene. But omni can also be undesirable, because if there's intrusive background noise, the mic will pick that up just as well as the wearer's voice. The real pros keep both kinds of mics handy and switch between them as needed. For my own application I think I'd actually have been better off with a cardioid (moderately directional) mic; but I couldn't find one of those with the other features and the price I wanted, so I went for the omni. It's still good for my purposes, and for many users it'd be better than a cardioid anyway. Also to be aware of: this microphone requires a full-size XLR connector with phantom power, and it has a six-foot cord. Pro and "pro-sumer" audio devices like my mixer provide those connections, as do many video cameras and portable digital recorders; but you're not going to be able to just plug this into an iPad or laptop computer or similar - not even with an XLR to TRS adapter, because of the requirement for phantom power. The length of the cord means you also can't be moving around, or sitting at a distance from the recording device, unless you extend the cord. I've been told that Comica makes another model that is the same mic with a longer cord built in, but that you don't really want that because the amplifier is in the XLR plug, the cord between it and the actual microphone isn't shielded, and the long cord can pick up interference. Apparently, if you do want a longer distance between mic and recording device, you're really better off to get the six-foot version plus an XLR extension cord (which will be carrying the amplified signal on balanced wires, thus much less sensitive to interference). I haven't tested that myself. No electrical interference problems on mine, anyway.
