Limited Life Span Of about Ten Years
The contactor is used to parallel the chassis and coach batteries. And if the Boost switch is pushed in the cab of the motorhome, the coach batteries are also used to help start the Diesel engine. That takes a lot of current. Over the years the contacts inside the unit arc and pit. The pitted material isn’t very conductive and all of a sudden the contactor doesn’t connect the two batteries. The contactor isn’t reparable. Cheaper contactors can be bought on Amazon but their mounting feet aren’t the same as the White Rodgers unit. That poses a problem when trying to reattach the jumper bars that conduct electricity to the printed circuit board. My guess is that cheaper replacement will have the same pitting problem. My suggestion is to try and never use the Boost switch during starting and be prepared to replace the contactor every 10-15 years. It’s about a 2 hour job and should be done by someone that understands electricity very well.
