We've had this product for about 9 days now. The verdict is still out on its effectiveness. Something I have to share is that we have a baby-camera-monitor in our son's room and so my perspective on how this works might be a little different. I'll start by saying that I dont think that my 26 month old son is frightened by the sun (so that's a relief). I cant be sure how he feels about the moon, although I thINk he likes it??? The first night, after having gone through our moon-sun demo earlier and saying our good-nights, my son crawled out of his bed and sat and cried for what seemed like 20 minutes staring at the moon (we ended up taking it out and placing it back in after he fell asleep with the moon setting turned off until 5 minutes before the sun came on). The next day he woke up EXTRA early (to my dismay--"oh no, not on our 1st day of Good Nite light training!") and had to wait a while for the sun to turn on. He cried and hollered for us as usual but then when the moon clicked on--he he got mad--it was like a slap in the face to him. I think he was dismayed that after all of his crying it was STILL night time. I explained that the moon came on because it was still time to sleep and that he had to wait for the sun. He then attempted to take the thing out of the light socket--so, that scared me. After we got up with him, he talked incessantly about the moon and we talked about how it is to look at but not play with (we let him take a good look at it and handle it before WE placed it back in the wall). I couldnt tell if it scared him or not--despite what it might sound like, I think he liked it--but just in case-- we opted to just have the moon turn on 1 minute before the sun every morning (he never slept with a nightlight before so we thought maybe this was just too distracting/exciting/frightening). *NOW, a side note, since purchasing this item NAP TIME has been a nightmare! He never had problems going to bed or going down for naps (he just woke up too darn early--between 5:45 and 6am every morning)! Now, I have to tell him that naps dont require a moon or a sun...that has been a real pain. And, as previous reviewers have mentioned it is just too cumbersome to reset it for nap time every day and then reset it for bed time every night. So, I am considering just taking it out of his room during the day...Although, yesterday I tried that and he had a fit (I think he really likes the thing). OK, so here is the kicker: we have had nooo luck in getting him to sleep in later. HOWEVER, I have noticed that (after about a WEEK of telling him that he cannot cry and yell for us until the sun is orange), he no longer hollers at us at 6am but he is still waking up at 6am. This morning, I woke up at about 5:30 (my circadian rhythm is still set to his old sleep cycle) and saw that he was still sleeping in his bed. At about 6:10am I saw that he was lying in his bed with eyes open. At 6:20am, he was sitting quietly in front of the sun waiting for it to turn on (in the past 10 days we've managed to move the time up from 6:10 to 6:25). At 6:30am, he came into our room and let us know that it was daytime and that the sun was on (he didnt even come racing in as soon as it turned on at 6:25--that was a first!). So, if you're looking at getting more sleep for YOURSELF, this might actually work (which I cant argue with, and can totally appreciate). But, as far as the claims that this will help your little one to get more shut-eye...I am going to respectfully disagree for the time being. Maybe in a couple of months I will see this as truth. I do see some progress in his appreciation for day/night schedules...I dont know if he will get more shut eye--over this (if anything, we are getting wacky nap schedules now)...but I appreciated not having to get out of bed this morning at 5:45am or even 6:10am. I think he fully grasps the morning concept now. That said, the item is an overpriced, cheap piece of plastic with a difficult to set clock and no option to turn the moon off or to set an alternate nap time schedule...but I am hoping that the $50 bucks (shipping included) ends up helping SOMEONE to get more morning zzzzs!
S**!
Nothing else has worked....until THIS! It's awesome!
This works wonders!!!! We got this light with the hopes of training my two and a half year old to sleep later. We have been trying to accomplish this her entire life to no avail, so I had very little hope of it actually working. When the light arrived, I was able to program it with ease (although it is a bit multi-stepped, I was still able to follow the directions and complete the process easily). My husband works late swing and I work days. So on the days I do work (three days a week) poor daddy is stuck getting up with only four or five hours of sleep. We tried blacking out the windows, but that just made her wake up earlier so that's when we got "Mr. Moon" as a hope that we could somehow change her schedule. She had been waking consistently at 6am. When we first got the clock, we set it for 7. The moon and sun are very understandable to a child her age, and we discussed it excitedly before bed. The first couple days she woke up near 6am and just sang or talked in her bed until "Mr. Sun" came up (at which point she excitedly yells "mommy!!! It's the sun!!!!"). Then she actually started going back to sleep until 7. When she woke up at 7, we changed the wake up time to 7:10. That was great for a couple days. Then we changed again in 10 minute increments (mind you, we've shifted her entire day 10 mins with each change, so her nap and bedtime have also grown later). I'm happy to say the clock is now set for 8:10, and she is sleeping until at least 7:45 and plays contented in her bed until she sees "Mr. Sun". It's working exactly as I had hoped! One little note. I don't think it would work as well if we didn't have black out curtains as my dear child always wakes with or before the sun. So our successes are due to the clock and the total black out thing we have installed on her window. I'm hoping she will eventually wake up at 10am.Another note: I don't find the light too bright in the slightest. I was actually hoping it would be a bit brighter because her room is dark and she loves to read books in the morning. It's way too dark for that.Last note (I think!): I didn't realize it plugged directly into the wall. So the first night she had it out and reprogrammed in a hot minute. So the box it comes in is a stand for the light. We now have it on the top shelf of her bookshelf and it works perfectly with an extension cord to a child safe outlet.
